How the NCAA Transfer Portal Works: 

The NCAA Transfer Portal opens January 2, 2026 and closes January 16, 2026. But that is not a totally firm timeline.

Players on the two teams in the CFP National Championship Game (01/19/26) are permitted to transfer from January 20 to January 24. In addition, players have a 15-day window to enter the transfer portal from five days after a new head coach of a school is announced.
