I refuse to accept that UNC is in the Elite 8.

Their HC has never been a HC before.... He obviously can't be successful as a HC. And he's only coached under 1 HC, so he only knows one way to do things. This can't be....

Totally agree. He can not possibly be successful without first being a head coach before becoming a head coach. This can't be true. I'm sure we are all mistaken about North Carolina being in the elite eight.

Izzo was an Assistant for many years at MichSt before moving up and he's done pretty well. Roy Williams spent years under Dean Smith before his first HC job at KU and he had an exceptional HOF career. Also, don't forget Hubert Davis played 12 years in the NBA under the tutelage of some great coaches, including several years under Pat Riley and several more under Don Nelson. Are you two somehow comparing Jonas' five years under Mark Fox and four underwhelming years with Travis Steele to Hubert Davis' career path. Very, very, very dissimilar.

I am excited that Jonas is likely gonna be getting a strong look from Georgia State.

You can look at just about any situation and justify an opinion that someone will fail. But there are numerous examples of people who have succeeded without head coaching experience and without what you would consider a perfect background. You can learn just as much as an assistant from what hasn't worked for someone as for what has. It's more about the person than the experience. There are plenty of people who have exceptional coaching backgrounds but fail. Tom Crean, just for 1 example. Ben Howland, Al Skinner, and on and on. But go ahead and cling to your argument.

You believe Ben Howland, Tom Crean and Al Skinner had failed coaching careers? That's a stretch.

Hubert Davis played under Dean Smith, Pat Riley and Don Nelson and coached with Roy Williams. This is no surprise, and there's no comparison at all to Jonas Hayes is my point.

They all failed in their last jobs. That's not really hard to figure out. Man, you are obtuse....

By the way, many, many people thought Hubert was a bad choice for UNC. They were convinced he would fail. Why? Because he'd never been a HC before....

Shaheen Holloway at St. Peter's had never been a HC before either....

When you have no argument there's always the personal attack… seems to be your go to these days even when there's no disagreement. No one has ever said an assistant can't go straight to being successful as a head coach. What has been said is that comparing Jonas Hayes to Kirby Smart, Roy Williams, Hubert Davis, etc is asinine.

Seriously, comparing Hubert Davis, nephew of Walter, who played 4 years under Dean Smith and another 3 to 4 years each under two more hall of famers in Pat Riley and Don Nelson and then 10 years with Roy Williams as an assistant an HC in waiting. No one has ever said Davis, or any assistant, could not be successful going straight from assistant to a major. You're arguing with no one. No one said that, no one believes that.

I think Jonas is the perfect fit and likely to get his chance at Ga State as soon as SMU makes their announcement. I'll also say I would have been perfectly happy with Jonas as our pick and it would not have surprised me one bit if he were successful here. But lawd, this Mike White hire is an unbelievable coup and I'm excited bout our future.

The difference of course is Hubert worked for a high caliber program with tourney appearances and titles.

Jonas last two coaches he worked for got canned.

I like Jonas. Good coach and guy. There is no chance a first time AD would hire him over Mike White. Especially not after they got fired.

I hope he gets Georgia State or Georgia Southern if it opens.

Going to be a ton of people after Georgia State.

Dean Smith, Pat Riley, Don Nelson, Roy Williams
or
Jim Harrick, Mark Fox, Travis Steele

I just have to look back in UGA's history to note the fallacy here. Ken Rosemond was the top assistant under Dean Smith and was awful at UGA. Ron Jirsa was Tubby's top assistant and was awful at UGA. You learn just as much, if not more, from failure and observing what doesn't as from what does. It's about the individual. Many coaches with objectively fantastic backgrounds fail, while those with seemingly "lesser" backgrounds succeed. Brian Snitker wasn't thought by the Braves' brass to be right for the permanent manager's position for the Braves. They saw him only as a temporary, stop-gap guy. But, when he got the chance, he proved them all wrong.

So when/if White struggles, do we get to look forward to other passive aggressive Jonas posts? I am so looking forward to debating what/if scenarios re: UGA basketball for the next two decades based entirely on what is Jonas is doing or not doing. Give it a break already.

Frankly, I'll post what I want, when I want. And you can KMA.... I believe White will be great at UGA, in case you haven't read other posts. I also think Jonas would have been. And I'll repeat it, whether you like it or not.

Ha. Too many monk crafted beverages for you today it seems. I don't get the hostility. There is little value in picking fights with the 8 people who give two ****s re: UGA basketball. There is way too much of that on here. None of us were in a position to hire Jonas. Everyone is hopeful re: White. Cannot we all post positively re: Jonas and enjoy his success going forward without manufacturing straw man arguments that purposely divide?

Bingo.

It's a win-win for us and Jonas, if Georgia State hires him. If Jonas does well and White does not, Jonas will be our coach in 4-5 years. Then, Jonas will have 4-5 years' head coaching experience which will make everyone here happy, too.

If Jonas and White do well, it's still a win-win.
