Slight correction, when Herschel signed with the Generals, they were co-owned by coach/GM Chuck Fairbanks and some Texas oil tycoon. Trump bought the team about a year or so after Herschel signed, but yeah, he did own the team while Herschel was on the roster.
As an aside, Herschel never signed a players contract with either the Generals or the USFL. In order to get around both the USFL policy of not signing underclassmen, and the league's salary cap, they concocted something they called a "personal services" contract with the team owner. When news broke that Herschel had signed, he immediately had second thoughts and tried to get out of the contract so he could return to UGA. Even though it was just a technicality, I always thought UGA could have challenged the case in court, since he had not accepted any money yet, nor had he signed an actual athletic contract. But we didn't really put up any legal fight (kinda like how we didn't put up any fight when Tubby left for UK). Just think of that '83 team with Herschel on it!!
(And as another aside, it looks like Misty May has been hitting the doughnuts since her volleyball days. Yikes!!)
