ATHENS - It doesn’t look like UGA football coach Kirby Smart was exaggerating about younger players pushing established starters for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs’ younger players made play after play Saturday according to observers and insiders, who spoke with Dawg Post about the scrimmage. Georgia is barreling towards G Day on Saturday.

“For the first time that I've been here, we've got guys that started last year. Most games, or a lot of games that got somebody either beating them out or playing better than them in spurts. That's not just on the line. We’ve got guys playing really well,” Kirby said last Tuesday.

That was evident Saturday Between the Hedges. The second scrimmage of the spring was another example of players with fewer carries and less experience flashing in a major way - starting with Dwight Phillips, Jr.

Dwight Phillips, Jr. showed out Saturday, insiders said.

“He stood out to be on offense,” said one observer of Phillips’ two-touchdown day.

“Phillips’ is our most explosive player,” one insider said of the rising junior. “Even Kirby said it.

“Dwight Phillips made a very impressive cut and scored on a long run,” added another insider of the action.

The offense appeared to win the day, according to those with knowledge of the scrimmage with running back Chauncey Bowens also having an explosive run Saturday.

“The offense had some big moments during the scrimmage,” one observer said. “They ran the ball well, and the receivers made some tough catches. The offense had some huge runs - Phillips really exploded.”

Presumed UGA QB backup Ryan Puglisi also had what was described as a good day.

“He was great today,” one observer said of Puglisi. “He was slinging all over the field.”

One insider had this to say about Gunner Stockton: “He stood out to me. The way he commands the offense and how he was pushing the ball down field… I liked what I saw.”

Former Buford star Tyriq Green was said to have ended the scrimmage with a red zone interception.

But multiple insiders and observers said that another former Buford star - KJ Bolden - was very noticeable on Saturday.

“He was constantly making plays,” one insider said of Bolden.

Another inside on Bolden: “He stood out the most in the secondary.”

Other players mentioned having good days: Quintavius Johnson, Chase Linton

Linton is “fast, and he can really make plays because of his speed.”

KJ Bolden has been consistently mentioned by insiders this spring.
