ATHENS - Year after year in the Kirby Smart era the Georgia Bulldogs have had a reliable, productive running back duo leading the way out of the backfield.

The Bulldogs had the best running back duo in college football history in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel in 2016 and 2017, setting a standard for everyone else who came after them.

In 2018 the Dawgs had two 1,000-yard rushers in D’Andre Swift and Elijah Holyfield. Swift carried the load in 2019, but he did have some help from Brian Herrien and a healthy Zamir White. James Cook and Kenny McIntosh also carried the ball some that season.

It was the Zamir White show during the shortened 2020 season before getting plenty of help from James Cook during Georgia’s national championship season in 2021.

The following season, leading the Bulldogs to a second-consecutive national championship, Georgia relied on Kenny McIntosh, Kendall Milton, and Daijun Edwards with help from promising freshman Branson Robinson.

According to FanDuel, the Baltimore Ravens have +700 odds to win the Super Bowl next season.

In 2023, Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards led the way as seniors, with true freshman Roderick Robinson flashing big-play ability towards the end of the season.

The Dawgs took a step backwards last year in the run game but still had a respectable duo of Trevor Etienne and freshman Nate Frazier. Now, it appears Frazier could be on the verge of “superstar” status heading into the spring. However, he’ll need some help if he wants to be at his best.

That leads us to one of the biggest questions about the 2025 Georgia Bulldogs. Which running back will be the next man up? Can anyone carry the load if Nate Frazier goes down?

That’s a question that can’t be answered right now.

Roderick Robinson missed just about the entire 2024 season with a turf toe injury. Branson Robinson hasn’t been the same since his off-season knee injury two years ago. Cash Jones has turned into more of a pass-catcher out of the backfield than a true running back.

Young pup Dwight Phillips Jr is a gadget back with elite speed. He’s not a guy who can have success between the tackles, and to be honest, he’s one big hit away from being blown in half. Chauncey Bowens ran for 58 yards last season as a freshman, but he’s not a guy expected to be in the No. 1 or No. 2 role at any point in the fall.

A healthy Nate Frazier and Roderick Robinson seems to be the ideal duo, but as we all know, you can’t expect running backs to stay healthy on a consistent basis, especially in the SEC. Injuries happen, and the Dawgs are lucky that Frazier stayed as healthy as he did last season. Still, Kirby Smart and the Dawgs are one Nate Frazier injury away from being in some serious trouble at running back.

Can the Bulldogs figure it out this spring? Can the Robinson duo fight back to full strength?

Those are two questions that Georgia fans want answers too. Unfortunately, those answers may not be available until August.
