ATHENS - If there’s one Alabama position group Kirby Smart and UGA football can exploit on Saturday, it’s their secondary.

Remember, that’s a big reason why former Alabama coach Nick Saban didn’t pick the Tide to play for the SEC Championship this year.

“I believe in our Alabama team, too. I believe in Jalen Milroe, but I think the question marks in the secondary”, Saban said at SEC Media Days. “Until those are resolved, it’s hard to really jump on that bandwagon.”

The Crimson Tide have several talented defensive backs, but many of them are young. They haven't played their best football yet, and they have a big challenge ahead of them with Georgia coming to town.

According to FanDuel, the Georgia Bulldogs have +240 odds to win the SEC Championship season this year.

Georgia’s wideouts didn’t have their best game against Kentucky. Neither did Carson Beck, and neither did the offensive line. The entire offense needs to play better than the Tide, and co-defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist spoke briefly last week to reports in Tuscaloosa about Georgia’s receivers.

“They have athletic guys”, Linguist said. “They have a lot of guys with at least 21 on the GPS. They can run and that’s the first thing you notice. They’ve got explosive guys on the outside. The slot receiver is a playmaker. They’ve got guys on the outside who can make contested catches and over the shoulder catches. They can make challenging, across the middle catches.”

“They present a heavy volume of throw game”, Linguist added. “They can do it all. They can attack you horizontally but also vertically down the field. There’s not too many things they don’t do. It will be a challenge from a schematic standpoint and a volume standpoint. We’re very aware of how good they are. They have our full-undivided attention.”

The Tide have two experienced cornerbacks in former 5-star USC transfer Domani Jackson and Wake Forest transfer DaShawn Jones to go along with several talented younger players right behind them. At safety, the Tide have seasoned veteran Malachi Moore to go along with playmaker Keon Sabb and others.

Again, it’s a talented group, but Georgia can cause some issues for them. In fact, just last week we saw Wisconsin’s Will Paulding caught 9 passes against the Tide for 83 yards and one touchdown.

Georgia’s receivers need to step up. They’ve got to get open more consistently and help create explosive plays. They have a big opportunity to do that against an Alabama secondary that isn’t in the “elite” category that they usually are.

Arian Smith has to stretch the field. Dillon Bell has to be versatile. Dom Lovett has to continue to be reliable. Colbie Young needs to be a weapon on the outside.

The opportunity is there. It’s time to get the job done.
