ATHENS - As you know by now, some of the nation’s top prospects were in Athens over the weekend for a big official visit to Georgia.
One long-time target in town was four-star EDGE, Jared Smith. The Thompson (AL) standout has been a Georgia target from the beginning of his recruitment and has been on campus several times over the last year and a half.
It’s never easy to go into Alabama and sign a top defender away from the Tide and Tigers, but the Dawgs have done an excellent job with Smith from the start.
Now, Smith was back in Athens for his big official visit and broke down his experience with Dawg Post.

According to FanDuel, the Los Angeles Dodgers have -6000 odds to win the NL West this year.
“The overall message to me was ‘development’”, Smith told Dawg Post. “Coach Diribe spelled out the game plan for the next few years and told me how I would fit in. During this visit I got to hang out with a lot of the team. They shared something they liked about being on the team. They kept it real with me. Not all days are fun but those guys work hard.”
Smith isn’t asking for a handout. He’s not asking for early playing time. He’s going wherever thinks he can grow and develop the most on the gridiron.
He knows it takes hard work to play at a place like Georgia. Nothing is given to you in Athens, and Smith likes to have that same type of mindset.
“It’s true that if you don’t want to work, don’t go to Georgia”, Smith added. “I saw a lot during this visit. Academics, housing, strength & conditioning, and food & nutrition. They all explained their benefits.”
“Coach Smart’s overall message was being developed on and off the field”, Smuth continued. Of course I will play football, but it’s always good to have a plan for after football. Overall it was a great visit and I will definitely be back in Athens this season for a game.”

A multi-sport star who shines on the basketball court as well, Smith brings a lengthy 6-foot-6235-pound frame. He transferred in the middle of last season from Spain Park (AL) to Thompson (AL), so he wasn’t able to see the field much in 2023. However, Smith is bound for a giant 2024 season as a senior this fall.
Smith is ranked as the No. 5 EDGE defender, the No. 2 prospect in Alabama, and the N. 41 overall prospect in the 2025 class.
He took an official visit to South Carolina the weekend of May 31st and has another official visit lined up to Southern Cal the weekend of June 21st. Look for Smith to make a commitment shortly after that as he wants to be committed before his senior season.
