ATHENS - Georgia Bulldogs QB Carson Beck is saying all of the right things this off-season.
In fact, Beck is saying exactly what any UGA fan wants to hear. In short - he wants his own national title. During an interview with Aaron Murray on the Players’ Lounge, Georgia DL Warren Brinson said that Beck has been motivated to get the job done as the starting quarterback.
“(Carson) was like: I want my own; I want my natty,” Brinson said of a conversation he had a year ago with Beck after the Dawgs topped No. 1 Alabama to win it it in 2021.
Then Brinson added this of Beck: “He's a grinder. He's the first QB in the building. The last two years you would see his truck parked out there. He's there getting notes. He's leaving last.”
First things first, I’ve learned over time that players say all sorts of things that sound great in the off-season. Everyone is working harder or smarter or whatever the talking point is. So there’s that caveat in all of this. That all might be true, but it doesn’t mean anything. Confirmation of work does not guarantee success.

Still, Carson Beck narrowly missed out on being the starting quarterback at Georgia the last two years. He wasn’t quite ready when he had an opportunity to grab the starting job before the 2021 UAB game when J.T. Daniels was hurt. Stetson Bennett, according to Todd Monken, outplayed him that week in practice, and the rest is history.
Now it is Beck’s turn to make history of his own. He did that at Mandarin in Jacksonville when he led the Mustangs to a state title his junior season. Trust me when I tell you that Mandarin isn’t exactly stacking up state titles, but they grabbed one with Beck under center.
What has Beck learned over the last two years? What’s he seen we’ve not been able to see? How has he matured has a person and player? It goes without saying that players far less gifted than Beck have left… Stetson Bennett left Georgia.
He would have been totally in his right to leave Silver Britches behind to find another path for his college career. And yet he didn’t. Why? Georgia, at this point, will almost certainly be his final and only college destination.
What does that say about Beck? What does that say about Georgia under Kirby Smart? Is it possible that after years of questioning Kirby’s decisions with quarterbacks we’ve finally gotten to the point where things are “normal” in the quarterback room at Georgia?

Seriously, think about the signal callers at Georgia over Kirby’s time. In 2016, Greyson Lambert gave way to Jacob Eason, who got hurt in game one of 2017. That led to Jake Fromm taking over. Fromm played for national title in 2017. He held off Justin Fields, who went on to play for a national title at Ohio State in 2020. That year Georgia started three quarterbacks - D’wan Mathis, Bennett and Daniels.
Daniels was set to launch Georgia’s offense, but he got hurt, and like Eason, never got the job back. Bennett took it from there.
Exhausted yet? Do you long for four-year starters like Murray and David Greene? That won’t be Beck’s path, but hoisting a trophy could be. We have tumbled into the fourth spring he’s been in Athens - that’s a long time for quarterbacks.
For now, Beck is going to have to hold off Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton. If he can clear that hurdle the path to another College Football Playoff appearance is there. After all, Georgia has started more quarterbacks this decade than it has lost regular season games - Yikes!
If Beck is as good as some insiders think, there might be a change in the way Georgia scores, but there night not be that much drop off in production. We will see over time what happens. But Beck has made plans to win - that’s clear.
