ATHENS - Georgia Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart said Friday that he’s ready to get rolling on the 2021 season.
“We believe camp should be physical and tough,” Kirby said. “We want to get tougher. We want to have physical, tough practices to get ready for the grind of what will be a tough season. Right now the focus in camp, developing players and getting tougher.”
The Bulldogs will face Clemson to open the 2021 season in Charlotte. But the the Bulldogs’ offseason has been full of action.
The Supreme Court ruled that Bulldog players and their NCAA foes can all be paid for their name, image and likeness. Georgia added three transfer players who are expected to have a big impact this season - Arik Gilbert, Tykee Smith and Derion Kendrick. The Dawgs opened up a new $80 million football facility. Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC.
“I have not wasted one second of thought on that,” Kirby said. “I know they are coming, and I am happy they are coming. I think it makes for a special group. I think it makes the SEC more powerful.”
But perhaps most notably the Bulldogs and the rest of college football enter 2021 with the expectation that they will play in front of full stadiums this fall. The cloud of the pandemic is still handing around with the late-summer surge in the delta variant around the South, but it looks like the season will move forward as planned this season.
