BREAKING: DB Transfer Tykee Smith Commits To Georgia

It was a big Easter and a great Sunday night for Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs as they add some must-needed help in the secondary with a commitment from West Virginia transfer Tykee Smith.
The impressive safety entered the ransfer portal recently and will now join new defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae in Athens. Addae of course coached Smith at West Virginia last year where the Mountaineers held one of the best secondaries in the Big 12.
Smith is a versatile defender with impressive athleticism who could play multiple positions in Georgia’s secondary, but he’ll likely play the STAR position where he can cover receivers or bigger tight ends from the slot position. He’ll also be able to play in space and come after the quarterback from the outside.
The Bulldogs lost both starting cornerbacks from last year, a starting safety in Richard LeCounte, and another defensive back in Tyrique Stevenson.
Not only will Smith provide more depth and have the opportunity to see the field quite a bit in a Georgia defense that plays in lots of nickel and dime situations, but he’ll also bring experience and a veteran presence. He’s played a ton of football and should fit in nicely in the SEC with Addae.
Overall, this is an outstanding addition and one that will help Smart sleep a little better tonight. In today’s era of college football, if you don’t have an exeprienced and talented secondary, you’re going to give up a lot of points. The defensive backfield still may be Georgia’s biggest weakness across the board, but it took a big step forward today with Smith jumping on board.
Last season, Smith allowed just 25 receptions on 38 targets, giving up just 110 yards. He’s recorded 2 INTs, broken up three passes, and had zero penalties.
