That's the rumor.

Uh, that would be the hardest of passes, for me.

You were selfish, unsuccessful, quit, and then washed out at Uk. I'll pass.

Others mileage may vary.

Definitely would not be my choice....

Geez. I hope we can do better.

I hope so too. Is there any indication that we can?

I know I'm the exception here, but I'd welcome him back.

The X factor I'd be willing to weigh is he did labor under Crean.

So, in the immortal words of Frazier Crane, "I'm listening."

We certainly don't need him. He can't play defense. He can't shoot. Not even free throws. The other teams don't even have to guard him, so that allows them to double team one of our good players. We can do much better than him.

Do y'all think Wheeler is worse than both our PGs from this year?

Sahvir had a better supporting cast at UK, so comparisons aren't perfect, but here you go:

Sahvir Wheeler (2023 per 40 minutes):
PTS: 10.7
REB: 3.2
AST: 7.8
TOV: 2.6
FG%: .417
3P%: .366
FT%: .533
STL: 1.3

Justin Hill (2023 per 40 minutes):
PTS: 15.5
REB: 4.8
AST: 5.2
TOV: 3.5
FG%: .380
3P%: .297
FT%: .793
STL: 1.2

Terry Roberts (2023 per 40 minutes):
PTS: 17.6
REB: 5.1
AST: 5.3
TOV: 4.0
FG%: .384
3P%: .299
FT%: .756
STL: 2.0

The 3P% and assist/turnover ratio jump out at me, as well as the fact that Wheeler's FT shooting tanked last season. He'd be asked to score more than he was at UK, so his PTS would certainly increase.

If White has something cooking in the portal, fine. But White needs at least one more PG, and I think we could do much worse than bringing Sahvir back.

His FG% last season would have ranked 4th on our squad (1st among guards) and his 3P% would have ranked 3rd (behind only Abdur-Rahim and McBride). I'm not sure "other teams don't have to guard him" is correct.

Your observation about his free throw shooting, however, is spot on. He was a 70+% shooter until last season, but his free throw shooting cratered.

Wheeler is not a good shooter; we watched him for 2 years up close and personal. And he certainly cannot defend one on one. I don't think it's a good argument to say that, because he shot better than most on our team last year, we should go after him. We were godawful shooting last year. I want to add players that are a significant upgrade. That would not be Wheeler. I told a couple of people we were recruiting Wheeler, and they just laughed and said, "You cannot be serious"....

Crean and the Kentucky coaches are the ones I read making the statements about the other teams didn't have to guard him seriously and were able to double team the better players. I didn't watch him play very much while he was at Kentucky. But I'm sure you are correct about Wheeler.

I'm simply offering facts. I presented his shooting percentages from last season. Anyone here can interpret them as they wish.

No argument here. Neither could 95% of our team last season. That's why I didn't even mention his defense. It represents neither an upgrade nor a downgrade.

I agree on all points. I'm stopping short of saying we should aggressively pursue him. I am arguing, however, that we shouldn't slam the door in his face. Everyone keeps saying they want to upgrade. Hey me too! Seems pretty obvious.

I'll be delighted when Mike White brings in all these great transfers that significantly upgrade the talent on the roster. Honestly can't wait.

But yeah, I confess...I enjoyed watching Sahvir play, warts and all. So if these super-transfers don't materialize, it would seem silly to me to turn away a kid who liked Georgia enough to give it a second go.

One man's opinion...
