Committed to Crean originally. Solid player, that has really overachieved relative to his high school recruiting ranking.

From an IU fan, Al is a good not great shooter. Good not great driver. So-so defender. Much better off the ball than playing point.

But I will say, as beloved as any Indiana player I can remember. As good a locker room influence as I've heard of. Beloved by his teammates. Work ethic off the charts. If he has to transfer, I hope he comes to UGA.

According to ESPN stats, 53 players in '20-'21 season shooting 45% from 3, and the 100th ranked shooter is 43.4%

http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/statistics/player/_/stat/3-points/sort/threePointFieldGoalPct/count/41

Am I looking at these stats wrong? (Serious question, not a smarta$$ jab)

Crean's system call for guys to shoot the 3. So if we're going to play that system, we need guys that can drain them at a high clip. Maybe its not 45%, but the target is certainly higher that what we shot this year.

No doubt, Crean's teams have not shot the ball well enough. No argument from me there.

For one thing, three point shooting % for individual's is really bouncy, year over year. I don't think anyone shots enough 3s in a college season to get an incredibly accurate picture of the players true percentage. 40% for a career puts you in the top 250 players since the the 3 point line entered the game.

The number one player in College this year is Da'Monte WIlliams from Illinois. He is 35/62 on the year, 56.5%. Last year he was 11/41. It is likely his true percentage over a large enough sample size in the high 30s, not 50, not 26.

I think more important than getting that elite shooter. Is having a bunch of guys that can make them in the high 30s. The game just becomes so much easier when there are 3-4 guys that can pull defenders out of the paint. You'll make more 3s, yes, but you will also make more 2s as well. Everything just gets easier. I'd take 3 38% shooters over 1 45% shooter every single day.

Etter is a reserve with limited minutes and limited shot attempts. KD missed several games early and therefore his shot total low.

Add the attempts of those 2 together and they are significantly offset by Wheeler and Camara whose percentages do not warrant their number of attempts.

A big part of shooting efficiently is making sure the right guys are taking the shots.
Smails v Czervik
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And I'm a huge Camara fan. He could be great if we had a true center to post up on offense and challenge opposing offenses from getting easy points in the paint. We're just asking him to do way to much, but potential is there.

I'm not sure it was our 3-point shooting per se that is the problem as opposed to our overall outside shooting prowess.

And any deficiencies were compounded too many times by our pesky problem of not defending same.

And hit a few more free throws . . .

And quit turning the ball over with such generosity . . .

And . . . .

UGA Men's Basketball:

Winning record against one SEC team (i.e., Ole Miss) since 1932
Operational expenses rank 14th in the SEC (was 12th in 2015)
Roster talent ranked 12th in the SEC this season

Considering its history, funding, and talent level the Hoop Dawgs overachieved this season finishing 10th in the conference.

Tom Crean has vastly underperformed if you want to just use expenses.

Tom Crean, is paid 22nd in the country. Georgia is closer to 200 than 22. https://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/mens-basketball/coach/

Roster talent is Tom Crean's #1 job. I think everyone agrees its not going so great there either.

I guess if Georgia spent more money on building a new gym Tom Crean could maybe get in the same ballpark as his salary would demand?

Tom Crean's salary is irrelevant. What UGA Athletics spends on the men's basketball program relative to its peers is relevant.

Since Kirby Smart was hired UGA Athletics has increased football operational expenses from #7 to #2 in the SEC (including the nation's #1 recruiting budget). During that time UGA Men's Basketball has seen its operational expenses fall from #12 to #14 (they only spent $233K on recruiting). If UGA Football operational expenses were ranked last in the SEC, then how do you think they would recruit and perform?

UGA Men's Basketball's Expenses from 1 July 2019 - 30 June 2020: $8,304,553

- Head Coach Salary & Bonuses: $3,363,066
- Assistant Coaches Salaries & Bonuses: $988,001
- Team Travel: $807,930
- Game Expenses (e.g., officials, security, event staff, ambulance): $685,954
- Support Staff Compensation: $681,313
- Visiting Institution Participation Guarantees: $552,000
- Athletic Student Aid: $539,583
- Administrative Overhead/Security/Facilities Maintenance/Utilities/Equipment Repair: $260,761
- Recruiting: $233,331
- Sports Equipment, Supplies, & Uniforms: $128,569
- Student-Athletes Meals (non-travel): $61,894
- Basketball Camp: $2,151

SEC Men's Basketball Expenses from 1 July 2018 - 30 June 2019:

1. Kentucky: $20,202,558
2. Alabama: $15,966,875
3. Texas A&M: $11,818,860
4. Tennessee: $10,554,613
5. Auburn: $10,536,653
6. Arkansas: $10,440,326
7. Vanderbilt: $9,901,818
8. LSU: $9,512,515
9. Ole Miss: $9,432,295
10. Florida: $9,317,385
11. South Carolina: $8,561,964
12. Missouri: $8,255,259
13. Mississippi State: $8,030,614
14. UGA: $7,756,002 (note: Hoop Dawgs generated a $2,937,801 net profit in Fiscal Year 2019)

So the amount you pay the coach is irrelevant?

So if we paid someone in the bottom third of the NCAA, but had a really high recruiting budget, we would be good?

I mean where do you think we should spend more money on Georgia basketball? We are paying highly for a coach.

Obviously, spend more in recruiting. Will that help? I don't know. Crean has never been an elite recruiter.

I guess we need to build a new gym. Do we tear down Steg or move it somewhere else? Will the new gym make us better?

Can you break down football expenses?

Personally, I don't think what we spend on the books in recruiting is nearly as important to recruiting (or winning) as what we spend off the books.

So AFD, we went all-in to compete for championships in football. Not saying we should lead the league in overall program spend in Basketball also, but is there a reason we can't at least be competitive - competitive in spending, recruiting, and on-the-court play?

Or does being all-in in football give the institution a pass to neglect basketball?

UGA Athletics generated a $40,538,013 profit last fiscal year (i.e., 1 July 2019 - 30 June 2020). Football and Men's Basketball are the university's only two intercollegiate programs out of 21 that generate annual profits. So the money is there, but UGA Athletics isn't committed to anything but increasing its reserve fund (since 2004), donating profits back to the university ($99M since 2006), and football (since 2016).

If UGA Athletics reinvested 100% of men's basketball profits on the team, then Crean would have a better recruiting budget, support staff (e.g., analytics, basketball ops, S&C), and assistants. Then talent, coaching, and results would improve.

Operational expenses for some teams in the 2020-'21 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament:

Louisville: $19,180,078
FSU: $16,773,013
Alabama: $15,966,875
UCLA: $15,468,381
Syracuse: $14,845,555
Villanova: $14,428,932
Michigan State: $14,395,851
Georgetown: $13,573,946
Virginia: $13,400,721
Kansas: $12,547,439
Texas Tech: $12,338,645
Texas: $11,649,912
UNC: $11,204,115
Ohio State: $10,996,364
West Virginia: $10,798,893
Tennessee: $10,554,613
Gonzaga: $10,496,251
Illinois: $10,480,939
Arkansas: $10,440,326

Florida: $9,317,385
Houston: $9,219,796

"Or does being all-in in football give the institution a pass to neglect basketball?"

That appears to be the case looking from the outside in.

What I really think it is is part incompetence - "we'll pay Crean /whoever top dollar money and that will solve everything, right? Right?"

And part being a tight wad.

I don't know. The underperformance is so obvious, so glaring, so sustained it makes you wonder. Are we really that incompetent? Do we really - I mean really - not give a rats ass about arguably the second most popular sports event in the US?
