ATHENS - It’s clear Philadelphia Eagles executive vice president and general manager Howie Roseman knows football.
He may be a Florida Gator, but he knew if he wanted to build a Super Bowl winner in Philadelphia, he needed to add winners to his roster.
So what does he do? He loads up with Georgia Bulldog defenders. Now, thanks to the “Philly Dawgs”, The Eagles are Super Bowl champions.
Roseman saw the 2021 Georgia Bulldog defense smother teams on their way to the national championship. Three months later Roseman selected 2021 Outland Trophy Winner and Chuck Bednarik Award winner Jordan Davis at No. 13 overall in the first round. He then selected 2021 Butkus Award winner and Georgia team captain Nakobe Dean No. 83 overall in the third round.
Roseman didn’t think outside the box. He saw winners and drafted them.
Of course he wasn’t done. A year later Roseman and the Eagles drafted superstar Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith with their two 1st-round selections in the 2023 draft. Then they added cornerback Kelee Ringo in the 4th round. They also added Lewic Cine last year, bringing in another former Georgia Bulldog national champion to Philadelphia.
And there you have the “Philly Dawgs”.
Roseman spoke about his former Bulldogs this week and spoke highly of Kirby Smart as well.
“They’re an incredibly detailed program”, Roseman told reporters. “Obviously they have a history of winning. When you add new players and you add this many players from one place, they know how to feed off each other. They have a chemistry that normally you have to cultivate through your team and through years practice. So they had a head start. You’re talking about really putting in to place one of the greatest defenses in the history of college football. They play with an edge and with mentality. Kirby (Smart) does a phenomenal job.”
