ATHENS - The UGA Football equipment staff is implementing custom fit helmet technology.

Kirby Smart has been known to use every single tactic at his disposal to help prepare his football team for Saturdays in the fall. Usually, it is in the form of a catchy motto or team meetings that are meant to bring his players closer to each other on and off the field.

The latest addition to trying to better the football program comes from within the equipment department.

Georgia Football posted a video on social media on Monday, showing that the players are getting their heads scanned by a phone in order for measurements to be made to create custom fit helmets for them.

Director of football equipment Gage Whitten explained a little bit of the process in the video.

“What we are doing today is we are going to bring some players in and scan them for a custom 3D-built helmet,” Whitten said.

The players in the video are seen with some sort of wrap over their head, and the equipment staff is using a phone to hover the camera around them in order to get specific measurements.

“What we are doing here is we want to ensure that we get the best scan possible for our athletes to ensure that the helmet is custom-built for them, that they are comfortable in their helmet, but also to where it is the safest helmet that they can wear,” Whitten said.

It will remain to be seen how different the helmets look or perform while they are custom-built. Helmets are a part of football that have changed over time, almost always with the intent to keep players safer, especially with the rise in awareness and concern for concussions and head trauma associated with the sport.

Guardian caps have been introduced to football recently. NFL players are allowed to wear them in game, however, not many do. The extra padding that goes on top of the helmet is not commonly seen during college game days either. Georgia players can be seen wearing them at practice all of the time.
