ATHENS - Kirby Smart’s coaching tree added another branch today as UGA Football running backs coach Dell McGee accepted the Georgia State head coaching position today.
McGee was a high school football legend in Georgia at Carver High School from 2005-2012 before working at Auburn as an analyst in 2013. He was Georgia Southern’s running backs coach before joining Kirby Smart’s staff in 2016. He’s been coaching Bulldog running backs ever since, but today, McGee’s dream of being a college head coach has come true.
ESPN confirmed Friday night that signed a contract with the Panthers to make him that program’s head man.
McGee did an outstanding job at Georgia, coaching some of the best Bulldog running backs in school history. The Dawgs consistently had a strong stable of running backs on the roster throughout McGee’s time in Athens. He helped recruit big names like D’Andre Swift, Zamir White, James Cook, Kenny McIntosh, Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards, among others.
With McGee’s impressive resume, this is a home-run hire for the Panthers. McGee knows the state as well as anyone and knows how to recruit. He’ll bring plenty of talent to Atlanta, and give that program the boost it desperately needs.
Now, Kirby Smart has a big hole to fill. Not only does he need to hire a wide receivers coach, but now he needs to find a running backs coach as well. It’s a job plenty of coaches will want, so expect Smart to replace McGee with the best available option.
The Bulldogs have one current running back on the commit list in 3-star Bo Walker and were in the running for several out-of-state backs across the country in the 2025 class.
