ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs are headed into 2023 with a change at offensive coordinator - to Mike Bobo.

On Wednesday the program released video of the former UGA quarterback coaching indoors this spring. Bobo’s focus has been on determining who the starting quarterback will be this fall - Carson Beck or Brock Vandagriff.

"Having him as our coordinator has been really good,” Beck said last week. “Obviously, him playing the position of quarterback and playing it here, he knows what we are going through. He connects and relates to us on that level because he has done it before. He is really positive and does a really good job with the offense, rallying guys and getting guys ready for practice. I am really excited to keep working with him and see how it goes.”

The Bulldogs are coming of back-to-back national titles. Bobo was part of the support staff a season ago. When the Ravens hired Todd Monken earlier this year, Kirby Smart elevated Bobo to calling plays and running the offense.

“Mike has a decade of experience as a successful SEC play-caller and over 20 years spent at UGA, both as a player and coach,” Kirby said in a statement announcing Bobo as offensive coordinator. “Mike was an excellent addition to our staff last year as an analyst, and we are looking forward to his expanded leadership on the offensive side of the ball.”

In his time at Georgia, Bobo used gifted quarterbacks to score record numbers of points. Matthew Stafford started under Bobo from 2006 until 2008. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Stafford won Super Bowl LVI with the Rams. Aaron Murray became the SEC’s all-time leading passer (13,166 career yards) under Bobo.

The Bulldogs were the No. 8 scoring team in the nation in Bobo’s final season at UGA in 2014.
