ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have never had a problem running the football.

The beginning of the Kirby Smart era in Athens was led by Georgia Bulldog legends Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Arguably the best running back tandem in college football history.

Then you had D’Andre Swift. Zamir White and James Cook came to town a little later, followed by Kenny McIntosh, Daijun Edwards, and Kendall Milton.

That’s without even mentioning guys like Brian Herrien and Elijah Holyfield.

So who is next in line to lead “Running Back University”?

Of course, that would be Branson Robinson. Built like a “brick house” according to running backs coach Dell McGee, Robinson showed big-play ability as a freshman last year, rushing for 330 yards and three touchdowns in a backup role. Two of those touchdowns came in Georgia’s national championship victory over TCU in Los Angeles, California.

With veteran back Kendall Milton sidelined for the rest of the spring with a hamstring injury, look for Robinson to get even more opportunities to climb the depth chart and showcase his ability over the next several weeks.

Assistant Dell McGee recruited him for a reason in the 2022 class. Speed is always important, but at this level, you have to have backs who are big, powerful, and know how to keep the chains moving. That’s exactly what Robinson brings to the table.

“He doesn’t have a neck”, McGee once said about Robinson. He’s very similarly built in the shoulders like one of my old teammates, Takeo Spikes. Nick Chubb was a good-looking student-athlete as well. Branson is more than just muscle. He’s very dedicated. He works hard in the weight room obviously, and in strength and conditioning. He’s a sharp young man with a lot of promise.”

A bruising back at 5-foot-10 220-pounds, Robinson is bound for a giant sophomore season in 2023.

The Bulldogs are a little banged up at running back right now, so expect Robinson to get plenty of carries in next month’s G-Day game.

Kendall Milton will need several weeks to recover from his hamstring injury. Daijun Edwards can’t take all the reps. Andrew Paul is still recovering from a season-ending injury he suffered last summer. Of course, Roderick Robinson is a promising incoming freshman, but he has plenty of backs including Branson Robinson, ahead of him on the depth chart.

Eventually, everyone will be back to full strength. And when that happens, you can still expect Robinson to play a major role for the Bulldog offense in the fall.
