ATLANTA - The legend of Stetson Bennett grew even more on Saturday night.

Everyone knows the story. The former walk-on from South Georgia who saved the Bulldogs against Arkansas in 2020, loses the job to JT Daniels, takes the job back from Daniels, leads Georgia to a national championship, and has them in the driver’s seat for another one.

It’ one of the best stories in college football history, but his play on the field is why his name will live on forever.

When the game matters most, Stetson Bennett comes through. When a play has to be made, he makes it. Especially in the 4th quarter.

The “clutch gene” is real. Some guys have it and others don’t. Some crack under pressure, while others like Stetson Bennett thrive in it.

He may not play perfect for four quarters, but once that 4th quarter starts, there’s nobody better in college football. That’s what ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum said on Monday morning about Georgia’s star quarterback.

“He’s the best closer I’ve seen in college football”, Finebaum said. “When you look at the three playoff games in the second half, nobody has done it better.”

He’s right. Bennett was just about perfect in the 4th quarter against Ohio State, going 10/12 for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Of course, we all remember his two touchdown passes in the 4th quarter of last year’s national championship against Alabama.

When the game is on the line, the mail-man delivers. As they say, big time players make big time plays in big time games.

That’s Stetson Bennett.

It may not look pretty all the time, but Bennett knows how to close on the biggest stage. The mail might not get there until the 4th quarter, but it always gets delivered.

Bennett will be back in action against TCU on Monday night in his final game as a Georgia Bulldog. The Stetson Bennett story has one last chapter to be written, and I expect he’ll deliver another championship to Athens.

This will be the mail-man’s final delivery. And if he closes the way he has throughout his career, he’ll be delivering another trophy to Athens.
