ATHENS - ESPN’s Paul Finebaum thinks Kirby Smart and the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs should be the team atop the College Football Playoff’s rankings Tuesday night.

He said as such Sunday morning after a wild rivalry weekend that saw four teams in the top ten losing - Ohio State, LSU, Clemson and Oregon. The weekend seemed to provide a clear path for the Bulldogs, Michigan and the top of the CFP.

Finebaum indicated he went back and forth about who to place at No. 1

"I vacillated all night long and finally put Michigan at the No. 2 position - although many would argue they had the most dominant win of the year in college football over Ohio State. Jim Harbaugh looks like he’s going back to the (College Football) Playoff for the second year in a row,” Finebaum said Sunday. “The Dawgs dogged it in the first half against Georgia Tech. You can expect that they were perhaps looking ahead to the SEC Championship Game against LSU.”

Voters in the traditional polls were more decisive than Finebaum, with Georgia taking up 118 of 126 (94%) first-place votes on Sunday. Michigan and the Dawgs appear to be in no matter what happens in their championship games.

The duo squared off last winter at the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens with the No. 3 Dawgs taking home a decisive 34-11 win over No. 2 Michigan. Neither team has lost since. Georgia has only played one game that’s been within a score (26-22 win at Missouri) while Michigan has played two (34-27 vs. Maryland; 19-17 vs. Illinois) in that time.

No. 1 Georgia is listed as a 17.5-point favorite to beat No. 11 LSU this Saturday in the 2022 SEC Championship Game. No. 2 Michigan plays unranked Purdue in the Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis.
