ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs impressed everyone over the weekend - including ESPN’s Paul Finebaum.
“Georgia was down right fantastic,” Finebaum said Sunday during his weekly hit on SportsCenter.
The Dawgs used their lethal defense to hold Tennessee’s powerful offense in check the entire day. Georgia jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead, and the Vols never got into the game in the second half as rain soaked a packed Sanford Stadium as the night drew closer and the game ended.
It was Georgia’s second win in a row over a team ranked No. 1 in the College Football Playoff Rankings. That committee’s rankings took a beating this weekend with No. 3 Georgia demolishing the so-called No. 1 Vols. Clemson, which was ranked at No. 4, lost by 21 on the road at unranked Notre Dame. No. 10 LSU beat No. 6 Alabama in overtime at Death Valley.
Three top-ten CFP teams lost to teams ranked below them.

“This is the easiest No. 1 of the season,” Finebaum acknowledged.
One reason why is that Ohio State struggled so mightily at pitiful Northwestern. The Buckeyes were tied at halftime, and scored late to get out of Chicago with a two-score win. Michigan needed an impressive second half to push past afterthought Rutgers. The Wolverines were trailing 17-14 before a 28-point third quarter rally.
“We know the winner of this game was going to be No. 1,” Finebaum continued about the Dawgs’ 27-13 victory. “We didn't think one team would be as dominating. The Dawgs looked like they did the first game of the year when they beat Oregon by 46.”
Georgia travels to Mississippi State to play the other Bulldogs Saturday night on ESPN. The No. 1 Dawgs are listed as a 16.5-point favorite as of Monday morning.
