ATHENS - Former Georgia Bulldog Roquan Smith, who is an All-Pro player for the Chicago Bears, said he wants to be traded.
The Macon County native was an internal part in Kirby Smart’s 2017 defense that came a play away from winning the national title that season. He was selected No. 8 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
“Unfortunately, the new front office regain doesn’t value me here,” Smith said in a social media post. “They’ve refused to negotiate in good faith; every step of this journey has been ‘take it or leave it.’ The deal sent to me is one that would be bad for myself, and the entire (linebacker) market if I signed it. I’ve been trying to get something done that’s fair since April, but their focus has been on trying to take advantage of me.”

Smith ended his career at Georgia as one of the program’s top linebackers of all time - winning the Butkus Award his final season in Athens.
Smith signed a 4-year, $18,477,168 deal with the Bears heading into the 2018 season. 2022 is the final season he is required to be in Chicago. He will be an unrestricted free agent in 2023. Colts LB Shaquille Leonard has a $98.5M deal he signed a season ago making him become the No. 1 highest-paid linebacker in the NFL.
With Smith on board, the Chicao Bears only had +1200 odds to win the NFC North this upcoming season according to FanDuel.
Smith has been extremely productive for the Bears. He’s started all but two games of his career and had 524 total tackles, 14 sacks and five interceptions.
