ATLANTA– The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off of a national championship season, but Alabama has something the Dawgs do not.

Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Bryce Young is back for another season as the Crimson Tide’s man under center, and according to FanDuel, Young has +200 odds to be the 1st-overall selection in next year’s 2023 NFL Draft.

In two games against Georgia last season, we saw two different versions of Young: One that torched the Bulldog’s defense and one that struggled to score against the Dawgs. In the SEC Championship game, he set the single game record with 421 passing yards and added three touchdowns. In Indianapolis, he was picked off twice.

Which version is going to show up in 2022?

The Heisman Trophy does not mean that much to Nick Saban and company without the championship trophy at the end of it all.

“I think that one of the most important things for Bryce (Young) or any player who has success is to understand that success is not a continuum,” Saban said. “You have to continue to -- success is momentary. So if you're going to continue to have success, you have to stay focused on the things you need to do to improve, to prepare, to lead, to impact and affect other people around you.”

Alabama is the favorite to win the national championship. Plain and simple. They have who a lot of people considered to be the best offensive player (Young) in college football and the best defensive player (Will Anderson Jr.) in college football.

Alabama has done well the season after coming up short of the national championship. We haven’t seen how a Kirby Smart led program comes off of a championship win.

Georgia lost a plethora of defensive talent and production. The younger players stepping up are no slouch, but the generational defense everyone raved over might not be quite as good this year.

Jordan Davis, Nakobe Dean and others are gone. Zion Logue, Robert Beal, Jamon Dumas-Johnson- it’s a go time for guys like them.

The real question is, will Young and the Crimson Tide be too much for Georgia to handle this time around? Sep. 3 is going to tell us a lot about this Georgia defense.

A lot of this is said under the assumption that Georgia and Alabama are on a collision course yet again, but that looks likely at this point in time.
