ATHENS - Year after year we hear Georgia Bulldog coach Kirby Smart talk about the same concern he always has.
“We’re not deep enough.”
He’s often right. It’s damn-near impossible to stack depth in today’s college football the way he did four and five years ago.
Smart told reporters this week that while he does feel good about his team’s depth overall, he still feels that it’s not enough.

“I think we have good depth relative to our conference but it's never good enough."
If there’s one position group Smart does feel comfortable with it’s the defensive line. In fact, Smart has no problem admitting that he actually feels good about the depth they have on that front.
“Our guys have been practicing really hard on defensive line and we’ve got a really good group that’s exciting to watch,” Smart told reporters this week. “They have been doing an exceptional job. Tray Scott really pushes that group and they've been doing a great job at practice. We’ve probably got as much depth as we've had there. I don't know that we have one dominant player, but we've gotten a lot of depth deposition and I'm excited to watch those guys go play.”
If you’re a Georgia fan that’s exactly what you want to hear. Over the last several years it’s hard to find a program that has played more consistent football on the defensive line than the Georgia Bulldogs. Even without Christen Miller, one of Georgia’s best defenders from last season, Smart knows he has a deep, talented group on the line.
There may not be a “star” right now in that group, but there are several who could play like one down the road. Sophomore Elijah Griffin could be one of the league’s best by season’s end. A healthy Jordan Hall could be a difference-maker. There are several more who are well into their careers already and are hoping to emerge and make a significant impact this fall.
What we know is that Kirby Smart feels good about them. There’s a quiet confidence that he has right now. If the defensive line is as deep as he says it is, good luck running on the Dawgs in 2026.
