ATHENS - Spring football is here, but there are plenty of Bulldogs who will be out with injuries as Kirby Smart’s squad starts their journey to repeat as college football national champions.
"We are certainly not deep enough at several positions, but I am not here to cry about it”, Smart told reporters on the day of spring practice.
That’s easy to say if you’ve recently won a championship, but it’s never an ideal situation to enter the spring with so many key players out.
Of course, star tight end Brock Bowers had surgery in February to fix a torn labrum, so he’ll be out for the entirety of spring practice. Smart added today that tight end Darnell Washington will also be out this spring with a lower leg injury. Fortunately, Georgia has one of the deepest tight end rooms in the country, so this is a big opportunity for players like Arik Gilbert, true freshman Oscar Delp, and veteran Ryland Goede.
Smart also said that linebackers Rian Davis and Smael Mondon will be out for the spring. Davis has dealt with injuries throughout his Bulldog career, and Mondon is a five-star from the 2021 class who saw time last year on special teams and in a back-up role at linebacker. This was going to be an important spring for Mondon, who showed a lot of promise last year and had an opportunity to possibly crack the starting rotation with a great spring.
Defensive back Tykee Smith, a West Virginia transfer from last season, is out for the spring as he’s still dealing with a torn ACL that he suffered before last season.
True freshmen Jacob Hood, Bear Alexander, Griffin Scroggs, and CJ Madden are also dealing with injuries and will be out for spring practice.
