ATHENS- Georgia’s banged up roster just took another blow, but this time it was to someone who was just about to be back on the field.
Georgia safety Tykee Smith tore his ACL earlier this week during practice. This was first reported by Palmer Thombs of DawgsHQ. He will require surgery and miss the remainder of the season.
Sources have confirmed to Dawg Post that the injury occurred on Tuesday, Smith was in a brace and was not present at practice on Thursday.
Smith, who had offseason foot surgery made his Georgia debut in the Bulldogs’ win over Auburn. He made an appearance at the STAR position, and it was assumed that he would battle it out with Latavious Brini for the role on defense.
Smith transferred to Georgia after two impressive years at West Virginia. In his sophomore season, PFF and other outlets named him an All-American safety. He was supposed to come to Athens and make an instant impact to Georgia’s depleted secondary, but he has a bad case of the injury bug.
Because Smith has yet to make an impact in a Georgia Bulldog uniform, business should be as usual in the secondary with Brini maintaining his role at the STAR position. Kirby Smart’s focus has been on putting the players who are available to play in the best position to compete. Even so, there was a lot of excitement surrounding what Smith could bring to the table for Georgia.
Everyone will have to wait until next season to see what the All-American safety can add to Georgia’s defense. As for the Bulldogs now, all eyes are on their matchup against No. 11 Kentucky on Saturday. College GameDay and SEC Nation being in Athens is a big deal.
Georgia’s defense has been elite to this point, only allowing 5.33 points per contest. That is ridiculous. They will look to keep up that pace without Smith in the lineup the rest of the way.
