UGA Defender Jermaine Johnson Officially Enters Transfer Portal
The Bulldogs have one more spot open as another player has decided to enter the transfer portal.
This time it’s senior linebacker Jermaine Johnson. The former JUCO star dealt with injuries this fall and was sharing time at outside linebacker with Nolan Smith, Adam Anderson, and others. Johnson has been one of Georgia’s better pass rushers the last two seasons with four sacks this fall, which is 3rd on the team.
Johnson started three games in 2020 with 16 total tackles including five sacks (second-best on team) and 11 QB pressures. He might have been a pass-rushing specialist, but Johnson certainly had an impact on Georgia’s defense this fall.
Sources tell Dawg Post the 6-foot-5 240-pounder will look to find another home where he’ll see more playing time in his final year of college. Johnson signed with Georgia as one of the top JUCO prospects in the country in the 2019 class and had high expectations for himself in Athens.
Johnson was ranked as the No.1 JUCO prospect in the country out of Independence C.C in Kansas. Johnson was a sack-machine in JUCO and brought that skill with him to Athens. He was never a consistent starter, but it’s tough to take playing time away from the other elite defenders on Georgia’s defense who know how to get after the passer.
As a Bulldog, Johnsons career games came against Murray State (2019), Auburn (2019), and Alabama (2020) where he registered four tackles in each game. In 2020, Johnson recorded sacks against Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, Mississippi State, and South Carolina.
The former 4-star made his decision official today via Twitter and said that although he loves the University of Georgia, it’s time to move on and find another home for his final season.
The Bulldogs will have to rely even more on senior Adam Anderson and junior Nolan Smith in 2020.
