Home Run Ball Powers Dawgs Past Campbell
Join Dawg Post and chat about the Dawgs' game with Troy tonight...
ATHENS - This was the lazy Saturday start that can happen in an NCAA Regional.
We’ve seen this sort of thing before from really good UGA baseball teams - it takes them a second or two to get rolling.
And to be sure, these Dawgs got rolling... eventually winnin 18-5 Saturday afternoon. Georgia has only scored 18 or more runs in the NCAAs three other times (2009 defeated Ohio State 24-10; 2008 defeated Georgia Tech 18-6; 1990 defeated Rutgers 20-9).
Still, the lowly Campbell Camels must be given credit for being on the front foot and attacking Georgia from the first pitch. The Big South champions scored in the first two innings and probably should have had a 4-2 lead in the third, but officials missed what was quite certainly home run that was called foul.
Sports is unfair. Then Georgia exploded.
Seven runs in the 4th and three runs an inning later put the Georgia advantage at 12-2. The game was over. Georgia survived what was a rocky start from starting pitcher Chase Adkins, who has pitched in the Friday starter role for much of the year.
That it is June can’t go unnoticed, either. Georgia hit four home runs against the Camels, the most they’ve hit all year long in a game. Campbell added one of its own. The ball is moving here in north Georgia thanks to the heat.
Georgia moves on to take on Troy, who disposed of Duke Friday night. Kevin Smith will take the mound for Georgia. The winner of that game will move on to a Sunday 6 PM start against the winner of the elimination game on Sunday at noon.
