athletics is the most visible part of any division one school.
There are very few exceptions.

The same is true in football. Applications went way up at UCF after their "national championship" a few years ago. Coastal Carolina's did as well after its magical season last year.
More applicants doesn't have to mean more admissions and instead the quality of those accepted just goes up.

Athens is such a great town that we have to work at being bad at basketball in order to hold the student applications in check.
