As a lifelong UGA fan and alumni, AND as a lifelong Falcons fan and resident of this state, is it asking too much for my pro team to draft a player or two from my college team??

I know pro football drafts for need and not based on college the player attended, but there have been so many misses for the Falcons through the years, when UGA products were available. Now, this year with potentially the most UGA players ever getting drafted, I am once again hopeful they will pluck one of our guys. I personally thought Wynn was the PERFECT pick for the Falcons but they didn't move up and the Patriots snagged him. OL and DL to me are the areas they need to improve-and I do love the Ridley pick based on best available. That being said, I am hoping they might potentially grab Trenton Thompson in a later round, or potentially grab John Atkins either really late or as a FA. Course knowing they are going to lose Coleman at RB after this season, I would also LOVE Nick Chubb but doubt he falls far enough.

I am sure others have to feel like me-just seems it never works out for my two favorite teams to unite in the draft and each year I hope that changes.

Congrats to the 3 first round picks, I like that in each case, those teams have multiple Dogs. I still will pull for the Falcons but will keep an eye out for the Pats and Bears-just really hard for me to pull for the Pats-too much dislike but now with 4 former players on that roster, WOW!!

Haney,

You're right. Of the 215 UGA Football players selected in NFL Drafts since 1966, Atlanta only picked 8 of them (i.e. 3.7%). Of those 8, only 1 played more than a year w/ the Falcons.

2011: LT Akeem Dent (3rd-Round pick) - played 3 years for the Falcons, then 3 w/ the Houston Texans
2008: RB Thomas Brown (6th-Round pick) - never played in the NFL
2007: TE Martez Milner (4th-Round pick) - played in 8 games w/ 2 starts: caught 9 passes for 50 yds
2006: QB D.J. Shockley (7th-Round pick) - never played in the NFL
1994: LB Mitch Davis (4th-Round pick) - never played in the NFL
1989: TE Troy Sadowski (6th-Round pick) - played in 13 games for the Falcons, then 73 for 5 other NFL teams
1981: DB Scott Woerner (3rd-Round pick) - played in 16 games for the Falcons and 1 w/ the New Orleans Saints
1977: K Allen Leavitt (4th-Round pick) - never played for the Falcons, but played in 8 games for Tampa Bay Bucs

1968: Ray Jeffords (8th-Round pick) - note: never played football for UGA, just basketball; regardless, the Falcons drafted him to play tight end; however, he never played in the NFL

Have never been a fan of New England but with 4 dawgs there now I will have to alter my thoughts.

We were hoping they would get Wynn or Michel or Chubb. No one seems to be talking much about Carter, but I dunno, maybe you or AFD can tell me if that's a need for the Falcons or not. I don't keep up with the pros as much as I do college.

Thanks for the backup AFD, just boggles my mind how few the local team drafts. Oh well.

Darin, I think LoCarter could be a stud for the Falcons but I bet he ends up with the Pats as well and it looks like Chubb might be headed to the Browns-hate that for NC.

Haney, you're welcome. Fwiw, here's another data point: since 1966 the Atlanta Falcons drafted 674 college football players. Of these draftees, 1.9% were from UGA.

It's going to be great--Brady is going to get Sony and Malcolm Mitchell Madden covers.
