I think our starting defensive line of DE Jonathan Ledbetter (6'4", 277 lbs), DT Julian Rochester (6'5", 300 lbs), and DT Tyler Clark (6'4", 305 lbs) is good.

I think DE David Marshall (6'3", 274 lbs), DE Malik Herring (6'3", 270 lbs), and DT Devonte Wyatt (6'3", 301 lbs) will be capable substitutes.

However, I don't feel confident at this time that if DT Michael Barnett (dislocated kneecap on 27 March 2018 which required surgery), DT Michail Carter (6'3", 295 lbs), DT DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle (6'4", 310 lbs), or DE Justin Young (sprained knee, missed scrimmage yesterday) were in and the game was on the line (e.g., 4th and goal on our 1-yd line) we'd get a strong push, pressure, or big play from them.

This summer a couple of 3* DT prospects will join the team in Jordan Davis (6'6", 330 lbs.) and Tramel Walthour (6'4", 277 lbs). Additionally, 4* WDE Azeez Ojulari (6'4", 224 lbs.) will join the team but it's questionable if he'll play this fall as he tore his right ACL on 24 November 2017 and had surgery on it on 15 December. Therefore, I'd be surprised if any of them proved to be impact players this fall for UGA.

IMO, as strong as UGA Football recruiting has been the last 3 years, they need to recruit the interior defensive line better.

AFD, whose 3rd string line would hold up in that scenario? Who goes that deep? I hear you though on the interior of the line. We need to recruit nose much better. I think by midseason the combination of DL and LB talent will be and we are gonna have a nasty front 7.

Not really worried at all about this year, but moving forward, we need the three newcomers to really develop and be ready for 2019. You have to worry about guys like Ledbetter and Clark leaving early and we probably need to step it up a notch in terms of DL recruiting this year. It sounds like we are addressing that issue, but of course you have to wait until Signing Day to see the final results.

Smart said the only concerns were the same ones they've had all spring defensive line and secondary.

The problems in the defensive backfield have less to do with numbers or depth. Georgia has several second-year players, such as Tray Bishop, Ameer Speed and Eric Stokes, who Smart had hoped and expected to assert themselves in the absence of the Bulldogs' graduated veterans. Instead, they continue to struggle with the challenges of the position.

"Some of the guys at that position, I don't think they're challenging themselves mentally with learning the playbook," Smart said, obviously aggravated by the situation. "It's their time and they have to step up or they'll be replaced by the people coming in. We're not playing really well at those positions."

HC Kirby Smart re: senior DT Daquan Hawkins-Muckle:

"He's competing. He's down to 305, which I told him he could not play if he was above 310. He's not an effective football player. He's taking that personal and he's achieved. He's around 305. If I can get him down to 295, I really think we'll have a good football player. But he's working hard."

DL is the hardest position to recruit by far IMO but there is no doubt we had better step it up there in the future or we will have an issue. A lot of our players/depth are JR/SR's this upcoming season. Now, what I could see happening is moving some of our mammoth OL kids buried on the depth chart over to interior DL, and then I think some of our DE/OLB kids could potentially grow into DT type players in the future.
