ATHENS - How in the world is this Georgia football secondary supposed to slow down the Crimson Tide?

Quarterback Keelon Russell has been crowned the next great Alabama quarterback. He’s got Kalen Debour and Ryan Grubb’s offense on fire. They’re explosive, they’re back to running the football, and they’re executing at an extremely high level.

Kirby Smart knows there’s a war coming. He and Glenn Schumann against Kalen Debour and Ryan Grubb. His talented secondary against an outstanding Alabama receiving core.

If Georgia wants to slow them down, they’ll need excellent play all across their defensive backfield. They gave up some plays against Vanderbilt down the field last week, but Smart said overall he was happy with that group’s performance.

Don’t Forget Your FanDuel Bets!!

According to FanDuel, the New York Knicks have +360 odds to win the NBA Finals next summer.

“I thought they played well,” Smart said after the game. “You can't give up PIs, and we had two of those, and those are gifts. But look, this league is becoming a closer to the NFL. They're calling things tighter and there's more PIs called each and every year, and they're calling things tight.”

“But it wasn't like there was a bust or a lack of technique. We just have to play better.”

On Bulldog defensive back playing better is safety Rasean Dinkins. After creating a big turnover against the Sooners, the second-year safety from Warner Robins got the start against Vanderbilt over the weekend and will likely play a major role in the secondary this upcoming weekend.

“Yeah he's been opportunistic,” Smart said. He's done a good job with the opportunities he's had. He caused a fumble. It's a huge play in the game. His ability to make plays has probably allowed him to start. He's made plays on the ball in practice. Part of being a good safety player is do your job and have good eye control. But creating turnovers, doing your job, having good eye control, all those things help. “

At cornerback, there aren’t many across college football playing better than Ellis Robinson. The elite defensive back had a beautiful INT against Vanderbilt and will try to shut down one of Alabama’s top weapons this weekend.

If that’s the case, don’t be surprised if Russell looks in the opposite direction. That means cornerbacks Demello Jones and Braylon Conley could have a lot on their plate this weekend. The Tide are going to push the ball vertically, and those two need to be ready.

“Braylon's been a great addition to our program,” Smart said this week. “He's a bright kid. He loves practice, he brings energy, and he’s a joy to be around competitive. He’s smart, instinctive, understands leverages in how to play the ball in and out of phase. I’ve been very pleased with him and Demelo and Ellis as well. Those guys work really hard every day out at practice, and,  pleased with their work ethic and continuing to get better.”
