ATHENS - As addressed in some of the earlier Transfer Tuesday features, the Georgia Bulldogs needed to add depth in the secondary after losing more than a handful of players back there this offseason.
Gentry Williams, the former Oklahoma Sooners cornerback, was the fourth and final addition that Kirby Smart and his staff made to Georgia’s secondary via the transfer portal in January. After four years in Norman, Williams is in Athens now for his final year of eligibility.
The previous two seasons have been difficult for Williams, missing the entire 2024 season with a shoulder injury. He then had season-ending shoulder surgery after suffering an injury against South Carolina in the middle of the 2025 campaign. The anticipation is that Williams will be ready to contribute for the 2026 season, but his participation level during spring practice will be evident here shortly as the Dawgs are a week away from the first day.
Williams’ best season came as a sophomore in 2023. He picked the quarterback off three times, had a pass deflection, recovered a fumble and totaled 30 tackles that season. It was by far his most productive year.
He was roughly ranked as a top-100 player in the 2022 high school recruiting class and widely considered the best prospect from the state of Oklahoma in that cycle. Listed at 5’11” and about 190 lbs., Williams is smaller than the other corners on Georgia’s roster right now.
Which takes us to what Georgia’s situation is in the secondary. The brief recap that was mentioned in the other defensive back Transfer Tuesdays is that Georgia has three of its five starters in the secondary pretty much set. Ellis Robinson IV and Demello Jones are Georgia’s top corners and KJ Bolden will man one of the safety positions. Two spots are likely up for grabs: the star/nickelback position and a safety spot.
Williams will likely be competing with fellow transfer Braylon Conley and the young players Georgia already has on its roster to rotate in for big snaps. In simpler terms, one of the questions Georgia will have to answer over the course of the offseason pertains to who will be the third cornerback that the program trusts to rotate in with Robinson IV and Jones for important reps.
Last year, Daylen Everette and Daniel Harris entered the season as the top duo on the outside. Robinson IV and Jones rotated in and eventually surpassed Harris on the depth chart. With Harris out the door through the portal and Everette entering the NFL draft, the upcoming third years are the clear starters.
Williams' experience in the SEC and under strong defensive coaches will likely aid him in the transition to Georgia - a program that is notorious for its hard-nosed coaching and practices ran by Smart. He also has the advantage of being an older and more developed player than everybody he will be competing with for time, despite his production being a little underwhelming.
There will be a sense of urgency for Williams, who only has one college season left. We saw last season with running back Josh McCray that there was a clear role for a player with one season left. Perhaps that will be the same with Williams. If not, then he was a depth play for Georgia in the transfer portal.
