ATLANTA - Georgia’s dominant 28-7 win over Alabama was certainly one for the ages.
Not only was it for another SEC title, but it was another display of elite coaching from Kirby Smart.
Say what you want about the Alabama injury list. The Dawgs were also banged up over the weekend and came to Atlanta missing several key members on both sides of the ball.
Smart and his staff had to use the entire roster on Saturday and several Bulldogs stopped up big when their name was called.
One of those Bulldogs was Cole Speer. A senior wide receiver and a dependable player on special teams, Speer is a Bulldog through and through who made the biggest play of his career on the SEC’s biggest stage.
With Georgia’s offense struggling early, it was Speer who made the games first big play, blocking an Alabama punt that have Georgia the ball inside Crimsom Tide 25-yard line.
The Dawgs would capitalize on Speer’s big play and take a 7-0 lead. Of course, they would never look back.
The Dawgs would go onto to crush the Tide, but it was Speer, a veteran reserve who was 0-3 against Alabama who got it all started.
Smart couldn’t wait to talk about Cole Speer after the game….
“Cole Speer spoke to the team on Friday and it was pretty emotional. Everyone will chase all the four and five-stars. You have to be a bold coach to say I’m going to take this kid who loves Georgia and do anything for this program and make sacrifices.”
Linebacker CJ Allen also had a lot to say about Speer after Georgia’s big championship win.
“I’ve never seen the guy complain once. He’s the type of guy that makes Georgia special. I love Cole Speer.”
The 5-foot-11 185-pounder from Calhoun hasn’t been a household name, but the senior stepped up when the team needed him most. He took advantage of his opportunity and set the tone for the rest of the game.
Now, Cole Speer has his moment. And it couldn’t be much bigger.
