ATHENS - In a shocking turn of events, 5-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, the No. 1 prospect in the country, has committed to the Miami Hurricanes over Georgia, Oregon, and Miami.
This is a young man that is fresh off a weekend visit to Athens and told Dawg Post last week that “program success and offensive line development will play a major part in my decision.”
Committing to Ohio State or Oregon over Georgia is one thing. But picking Miami over Georgia just doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Yes, Miami offensive line coach Alex Mirabel has a really nice resume. He coached Penei Sewell and developed many other Oregon Duck linemen who were drafted during his days with Mario Cristobal in Eugene. The guy knows what he’s doing.
Still, most insiders believe this decision was mostly NIL related. That’s the world we’re living in. All of these major prospects have agents now. Recruiting is a business and business is money. That’s the simple truth. However, we’ve seen this Georgia staff land elite prospects without offering the biggest check on the table.
Jared Curtis left money on the table to commit to Georgia. So did KJ Bolden. So did CJ Wiley and many others. Sources thought Cantwell would do the same, but that obviously didn’t happen.
How many times have we seen an elite prospect spend a weekend in Athens and commit somewhere else two days later? It’s not something you see very often. If ever.
DON’T FORGET YOUR FANDUEL BETS!!
According to FanDuel, the Green Bay Packers have +260 odds to win the NFC North this season.
Now here’s the good news. If you want to call it good news. Kirby Smart and Stacy Searels aren’t going to sit on their hands and just give up here. They’ve recruiting Cantwell extremely hard and are going to do their best to get back in the race. There’s no quit in this staff.
Unfortunately, the world of recruiting has changed. Relationships still matter, and that’s why Georgia will once again sign an elite recruiting class in the 2026 cycle. However, there will always be a Justus Terry and a Jackson Cantwell. Guys the Georgia staff feels good about landing, but at the last minute, decide they’d rather switch things up.
Sources say the Georgia staff felt good about their chances with Cantwell before his weekend visit to Athens. Sources say they felt even better when he left. On Monday morning, sources still told Dawg Post that the Bulldogs were the team to beat.
But today, Miami was the pick. The same Miami team that LOST TO IOWA STATE in the damn Pop Tarts Bowl last year.
Kirby Smart and the Dawgs took one on the chin today. They did everything they could but came up just short in the end. We’ll see if anything changes over the next several months.
