ATHENS - Two years ago, former Georgia Bulldog defender Travon Walker was selected No. 1 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Could another Bulldog do it again in 2025?

It’s not likely, but NFL scouts are sky-high on Bulldog EDGE defender Mykel Williams right now as he heads into his junior season in Athens this fall. In fact, one NFL Draft expert at ESPN, Jordan Reid, thinks Williams is the best overall prospect right now who is eligible for the 2025 Draft.

“Georgia EDGE defender Mikel Williams enters the season as the No. 1 ranked player on my 2025 NFL Draft  “big board”, Reid tweeted this week.

“The 6-foot-5 265-pounds has enormous upside”, Reid wrote for ESPN. “While he has nine sacks during his first two seasons, the stat sheet doesn’t tell the full story of how valuable he is to the Georgia defense.”

Reid wrote about Williams’ versatility and why that’s a big reason scouts believe he’ll fit right in at the NFL level. The former 5-star prospect played 162 snaps at defensive tackle during the 2023 season along with 148 at defensive end and 54 more at outside linebacker, a position he’ll play more at in 2024. In total, Williams ended with 16 total tackles, 4.5 sacks and 23 QB pressures last year.

His overall production may not blow anyone away, but his talent and ability to shed tackles and create havoc was on full display last year. He made things easier for his teammates all year long, and he has a chance to have a truly dominant season as a junior this fall. If he stays on this path, he will absolutely hear his name called early in the first round of next year’s draft.

According to FanDuel, the Atlanta Falcons are 2.5-point favorites to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2024 season opener this fall.

Of course, Williams isn’t the only Georgia Bulldog who is expected to go early in next year’s draft.

Another ESPN Draft expert, Matt Miller, has Carson Beck going No. 1 overall next year.

“Beck -- my QB1 in the class at the moment -- is a steady pocket passer with a big arm and great processing speed. And he is primed for a breakout season after throwing 24 touchdown passes and completing 72.4% of his throws in his first season as a starter in 2023.”

Listen, if a completely average stat-packing quarterback like Bo Nix can go in the first round, along with an athletic game game-manager in JJ McCarthy, NFL general managers will give an arm and a leg to select someone like Carson Beck.

Beck is an accurate quarterback who can read defenses, go through his progressions, work the pocket, and deliver a strike down the field. As good as he was in 2023, look for Beck to be even better in his final season this fall. He’s got an elite offensive line in front of him, a stable of backs, and even without Bowers and McConkey, Beck will be surrounded with plenty of weapons this fall.

Expectations are high, but Carson Beck expects to exceed them. With a big 2024 season, Beck could absolutely go No. 1 overall next year.
