Kirby Smart, Carson Beck and the rest of the Bulldogs enter 2024 G Day with their sights set on winning another national title. The Bulldogs are the betting favorite to win it all this winter, and Beck is a leading Heisman candidate. UGA football's scrimmage over the weekend will be the only public showing of the Dawgs until they face Dabo Swinney's Clemson Tigers to start the season in Atlanta.

Beck returns to lead Georgia after posting a 13-1 record in his first year as the Bulldogs’ starting QB in 2023. He was a Manning Award finalist after finishing 5-1 versus top-20 opponents with a 73.9 Completion Percentage (125-169) for 1,693 yards, 13 touchdowns and only two interceptions in those contests.

Beck’s return is bolstered by the fact that four of five starters on the line return in LT Earnest Greene III, LG Dylan Fairchild, RG Tate Ratledge and RT Xavier Truss. Joe Moore Award finalists the last three years, the unit enabled Georgia to score 40.1 points per game while setting a school record with 7.26 Yards Per Play.

Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards accounted for more than 1,700 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns out of the backfield last year, and both departed for the NFL. Candidates to replace that duo will be Roderick Robinson II, Andrew Paul and Branson Robinson, who was sidelined in 2023 while recovering from an ACL tear, among others. A new face in the crowd, Florida transfer Trevor Etienne, will also be vying for a spot in the rotation after rushing for 249 times for 1,472 yards and 14 touchdowns in his two seasons with the Gators while also catching 30 passes for 238 yards and one touchdown and returning 28 kicks for 671 yards.

Georgia captured the 2021 and 2022 national championships and went 13-1 last season thanks in large part to three pivotal pass catchers. Two-time Mackey Award winner Brock Bowers, All-SEC receiver Ladd McConkey and Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, who finished with more than 1,000 yards receiving in his career, have all departed and are training for the NFL.

While that trio made up three of the top four receiving leaders from 2023, the Bulldogs still welcome back a dangerous corps at receiver. Dominic Lovett had 54 catches for 613 yards and four touchdowns in his first year at Georgia while the versatile Dillon Bell hauled in 29 catches for 355 yards and two scores, ran 25 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns and even passed for a touchdown. In addition, London Humphreys (Vanderbilt), Michael Jackson III (USC) and Colbie Young (Miami) transferred to UGA in January and are expected to contribute.

The Bulldogs have a host of new coaches on staff following Georgia’s third straight season with at least 13 wins. James Coley (wide receivers), who returns for his second stint during the Kirby Smart era, Josh Crawford (run game coordinator/running backs), Travaris Robinson (co-defensive coordinator, safeties) and Donte Williams (defensive backs) are fresh additions while Kirk Benedict has been promoted from special teams quality control to special teams coordinator. In addition, Will Muschamp has transitioned into an off-field analyst for the Bulldogs.

Georgia welcomes back a two-year starter in P Brett Thorson and sophomore PK Peyton Woodring after both shined in 2023. Thorson had a 43.8 average on 32 punts in 2023 including 21 that resulted in fair catches. Thanks in part to Thorson’s punts and to the entire punt coverage team, Georgia was the only team in the FBS that did not allow a punt return in 2023. Woodring was a Lou Groza Award semifinalist after scoring a team- high 134 points, going 21-for-25 on field goals and 71-for-71 on PATs in his first year last season. He ranked sixth nationally in Scoring and third among kickers and his 134 points ranks third best in school history for a kicker and most for a Bulldog freshman kicker.

Seven of 11 starters from Georgia’s defense that helped blitz No. 5 Florida State, 63-3, return in 2024, including second-leading tackler Smael Mondon, Jr. who had 68 stops. The Bulldogs will need to replace three starters from the secondary as Javon Bullard, Kamari Lassiter and Tykee Smith are preparing for the NFL Draft. Still anchoring the defensive backfield are All-American safety Malaki Starks and Daylen Everette, who each started all 14 games last year. Linemen Zion Logue and Tramel Walthour are also preparing for the League, so Mykel Williams, Nazir Stackhouse and Warren Brinson will be leaned on to lead. With Mondon, Jr., CJ Allen and Chaz Chambliss back, the Bulldogs have the most familiar faces returning in the middle.
