ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the UGA football team have officially lost a commitment from 5-star QB Dylan Raiola.
As we reported last week, sources told Dawg Post that Raiola and his family were considering other options with starting quarterback Carson Beck thinking hard about coming back to Athens for the 2024 season.
Now, Beck is returning, and Raiola is off to Nebraska.
This comes as no surprise to Dawg Post members as Raiola is a Nebraska legacy and has always dreamed of playing for his childhood program.
Raiola committed to Mike Bobo and the Bulldogs back in May, but some behind the scenes told Dawg Post that as the season grew on, it became less likely to Raiola and his family that they would be able to see the field consistently in 2024.
Sources say Raiola wants to play early, and that’s just not happening at Georgia. The last thing Kirby Smart wants to do is play a freshman quarterback with an SEC schedule. That’s a recipe for disaster, and that recipe won’t work in Athens.
So between playing time and NIL opportunities, along with the fact that he’s able to play for his dream school, Raiola made the decision to flip his commitment to Nebraska.
After transferring to Buford this fall to play closer to Athens, Raiola’s recruitment is one folks will talk about for a long, long time.
Why didn’t Raiola just commit to Nebraska originally?
What happened this fall that turned Raiola off from Georgia?
Why did he think he could win the job as a freshman?
Why move to Buford if Nebraska was still a threat to land his commitment?
Those are the questions many Georgia fans have right now. At the end of the day, Raiola’s heart was in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Now, it’s Ryan Puglisi season. Puglisi is Georgia’s lone QB commit in the 2024 class and is already in Athens and working with the team. Puglisi is ranked as the No. 9 QB prospect and the No. 142 overall prospect in the 2024 class.
