ATHENS - UGA Football’s 2024 schedule is now public - and it has huge showdowns including matchups with the Clemson Tigers, Texas Longhorns, Alabama Crimson Tide and of course the Florida Gators.
Georgia will travel to face Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide on September 28 at 7:30 PM in a game that has already been selected by ABC. The two programs have combined to win the last three national titles. ABC's Good Morning America announced that Bama and Georgia would play in prime time Wednesday morning - an indication of how powerful the matchup is for TV executives.
Alabama (70.1 million) and Georgia (64.9 million) were two of the three most-watched teams in college football this season. Ohio State (66.6 million) was the second most-watched program. Georgia and Alabama have been proven winners for TV executives whenever they play - and particularly when they play one another.
The series between the two is the second most-watched in the sport since 2012 (134.1 million total viewers) in spite of not being a yearly series (UM-Ohio State | 143.3 million total viewers)
The Bulldogs will also travel to SEC newcomer Texas on October 19, in what should be another massive draw for fans and TV. That game comes before the Bulldogs’ showdown in Jacksonville later that month with the Gators - a game that was a staple of CBS’s coverage of the SEC over the last nearly three decades.
Kirby Smart’s program will open the season in Atlanta against Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers. The two teams last met in Charlotte at the opening of the 2021 season. No. 5 Georgia beat No. 3 Clemson that night. The Labor Day matchup is set for a Saturday kickoff.
Those four games were all announced before the SEC released the Dawgs’ 2024 schedule Wednesday night in a made-for-TV special that aired on both SEC Network as well as ESPN.
The SEC’s agreement with Disney in 2020 means a new broadcasting paradigm 2024. Now the SEC can have as many games broadcast on network television (ABC) as it wants. Previously the league was only able to broadcast one game a week on network television (CBS) except the two times a year when CBS had a doubleheader weekend.
Now games like UGA-Alabama, UGA-Texas, Georgia-Auburn and Georgia-Florida can be shown in primetime if the SEC and Disney so choose (UGA insiders have maintained that UGA-UF is very unlikely to be a night game any time soon). Night games will be come more common for Georgia - home and away. That’s because the Bulldogs are a huge brand and draw.
Georgia played on network TV seven times in the regular season in 2023. They could be on ABC ten times in 2024 - meaning all SEC games and the clashes with Clemson and Georgia Tech.
Games not broadcast on ABC will be shown on ESPN, ESPN2, the SEC Networks or in rare cases ESPNU. Per the agreement with Disney, one Georgia game a season will be streamed exclusively on ESPN+.
