ATHENS - Kirby Smart’s UGA Football team gained a player through the NCAA’s Transfer Portal today when former Florida Gator running back Trevor Etienne made his announcement to commit to the Bulldogs.

With both Kendall Milton and Daijun Edwards, Georgia’s leading rushers, eligible to leave school, Dell McGee decided to add a reliable, experienced back from the transfer portal to boost next year’s running back room.

Injuries happen, and at running back, they happen often. You can never have too many backs, and McGee just added one of the best in the portal.

For the Gators last season, Etienne ran 131 times for 753 yards and 8 touchdowns. At 5-foot-9 and 205-pounds, the former Gator is a tough, tackle-breaking back who can move the chains. He won’t be asked to carry the load in Athens, but he’s certainly a capable back who can provide depth and occasional big-play ability. He’s also a respectable pass-catcher who hauled in 21 passes for 172 yards last season, finding the end-zone once.

Georgia needed a running back through the portal who can make an instant impact next year, and Etienne will be that guy.

Started in 2018, the NCAA's transfer portal was started to help the process of players seeking to transfer to other schools. Players have to inform Georgia of their intent to leave, and then UGA has two days to enter that player's name into the system. Once that happens the player can be recruited by other schools and start the process of contact and visits.

The portal is open for football from Monday, December 4th until January 17, 2024, but the vast majority of high-level transfers are expected in December. According to the NCAA, 1,833 players entered the transfer portal at the FBS level of college football in 2002.
