ATHENS - No. 1 UGA Football’s 31-23 win over Georgia Tech in Atlanta was the most-watched edition on Clean Old Fashioned Hate on record - by millions of viewers.
The Bulldogs beat Georgia Tech for six game in a row with more than 5.3 million viewer looking on. The previous high in viewership for the rivalry game during Todd Gurley’s performance in an overtime win for Mark Richt’s Bulldogs over the Jackets in Atlanta in 2013 - a game that was also broadcast on ABC.

That game was watched by 3,530,000 going up against an Iron Bowl that featured the so-called Kick Six on CBS between No. 4 Auburn and No. 1 Alabama. The massive increase is likely due at least in part to UGA playing in prime-time on ABC - a rarity for Georgia because of the SEC’s contract with CBS. For the last 20-plus years the typical path for UGA to play on ABC was to play “at” an ACC school, like Georgia Tech or Clemson. Only two other times in recent memory have the Bulldogs been given the spotlight of a primetime network TV game away from home - (2013 at Clemson|8.1M on ABC; 2017 at Notre Dame | 4.1M on NBC).
The success of the Clean Old Fashioned Hate on ABC could give Disney reason to start giving the game more prominence in the future as Disney now controls the rights to all SEC games as well as all ACC games - meaning the company could start to push Clean Old Fashioned Hate as must-see programing Thanksgiving Saturday. The rivalry has been played on ABC 19 times.
ESPN has reported that Texas and Texas A&M will return to their year-end rivalry in 2024, but unlike in the past, the two foes will face off on the final Saturday in 2024 - not on Friday or even Thursdays as was the case in so many of their Big 12 showdowns. That could hurt the chances of Tech-UGA winding up in primetime again in the future.
