ATHENS - After a turbulent and entertaining first weekend of the season, UGA football remains the No. 1 team in the country.
The Bulldogs were at the top of the AP Poll, which was released Tuesday - slightly delayed because of games on Sunday and Monday during the opening week of college football. Those two games, specifically, caused a major shakeup in the rankings.
On Saturday, Kirby Smart’s Dawgs overcame a pedestrian start to the game to roll Tennessee-Martin 48-7. The win was the Bulldogs’ 18th in a row overall, 19th in a row on Dooley Field, and Georgia tied the school record for regular-season wins in a row with its 28th, matching the great run of the 1981-83 teams. Georgia hosts Ball State Between the Hedges this Satuday.
Georgia has scored at least 35 points in its last five games dating back to the 37-14 win over Georgia Tech in November 2022.
Florida State’s second half blowout of LSU seemed like it might be the story of the weekend - along with unranked Colorado’s win at previously ranked TCU. But mighty Clemson’s blowout loss at Duke was unexpected. The Tigers are 3-4 in its last seven games. Clemson has lost by three scores three times since losing 35-14 at Notre Dame.
The Tigers might not be in the top ten anymore, but No. 3 Alabama’s showdown with No. 11 Texas is one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. The Tide will try to jumpstart the SEC’s season in out-of-conference games. LSU, South Carolina and the Gators all lost to ranked teams away from home over the weekend. Alabama is considered a touchdown favorite to beat the Horns.
