ATHENS - LSU coach Brian Kelly made a curious comment about UGA Football following LSU’s second-half collapse to No. 8 Florida State on Sunday night in Orlando.

"The buck stops with me, and I've got to get our football team to understand and recognize that you've got to play this game for four quarters with a mentality," Kelly told reporters after the 45-24 loss to the Noles. "We just did not, for some reason. We thought we were somebody else. We thought we were the two-time national champion Georgia Bulldogs or something. I don't know what we thought, but we were mistaken.”

No. 5 LSU took a 17-14 lead to the half - even after Kelly decided to go for it twice in the red zone only to be turned away on fourth down. Florida State outscored the Tigers 31-7 in the second half as LSU’s defense began to look tired, and Florida State’s run game opened up the Noles’ offense.

Kelly has matched up with Georgia three times - taking losses in all three games. No. 15 Georgia’s come-from-behind win over No. 24. Notre Dame in 2017 helped Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs springboard to win the SEC, the Rose Bowl Game and and play in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Two years later, Kelly’s No. 7 Irish lost a tight game in Athens to No. 3 Georgia. The 23-17 win was watched by over 9 million viewers on CBS. Last year, No. 1 Georgia pummeled No. 14 LSU on the way to the program’s second SEC Championship and second national title under Kirby.

This summer Kelly talked about closing the gap with UGA Football

“Alabama and Georgia continue to hold that mantle of consistency in terms of playing for championships, and that's what we'll be looking to be at LSU. Playing for championships consistently year in and year out,” Kelly said. “I know that based upon how we've recruited and how we'll continue to recruit, that we'll have a football roster that will be able to compete against Georgia. Is that right now? No, it's not. but if we continue to do what we're doing, we're going to have a roster that can compete against Georgia, and then it's just a matter of getting it done on the playing field so everybody then can assess, they've closed the gap.”
