ATLANTA - The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and coach Kirby Smart are getting ready for another run at the national title. Folks are festive. It is cold and nasty outside. Stetson Season has returned. You are welcome college football.

The opening of big college football games are often moments in time where one team is feeling another out. Saturday night we saw Georgia wait to see if LSU was going to be able challenge them. For a moment they did.

Then LSU decided to let Christopher Smith think about making a game-changing play. That’s when Todd Monken nearly came out of his seat. When Smith picked up the Nazir Stackhouse’s blocked FG and ran it back the length of the field we learned in a matter of moments what we should have learned during the length of the season.

Georgia might not always be great. But they will explode on you - and not just Monken’s offense.

Saturday night was a lesson in ways to beat you - and Georgia has no shortage of that. As Monken’s horror turned into delight, Georgia’s imperfect perfect season continued. Monken’s offense added another 43 points - most of which was provided by Stetson Bennett’s wizardry.

Its Stetson Season again.

The quarterback and Georgia’s offense needed a good day, and that group responded with 529 yards, scoring drives or scoring attempts in seven of their first ten drives and by scoring over 40 points for the seventh time in 13 contests.

Bennett “probably” earned a trip to NYC with his four-touchdown performance. If you had Stetson Bennett on your Heisman finalist card after the 2020 season you’ve been living right.

This is a lethal Georgia team. Ohio State? Michigan? TCU? Georgia is better than all of them. The Dawgs can possibly lose to the Buckeyes and Wolverines, but it is going to be hard to top this team - which can suffocate you in any way needed.

Run game? Georgia is destroying people on the ground. Consider that Georgia has run for 200-plus yards in all but four games since the blowout win in Cootlumbia. Even more critical - only the Ducks, Missouri and Oregon have run for 100 yards against Georgia this season.

You will not beat this team by throwing all the time. Ohio State could put that notion to the test, but how many times do we need to see something before we know that it isn’t going to happen? LSU threw for 500 yards and lost by 20. Tennessee game in high flying and lost a slow-motion blowout. State has their style - it didn’t work. Oregon? Same thing.

Georgia can lose - they can. But who would you rather be coming into December? Sometimes it is obvious what’s going on. Sometimes it isn’t “Georgia hasn’t played nobody Pawl!” Sometimes the best team, with five wins over top 25 teams, is the best team and wins it.

Sometimes that’s what happens. LSU did that in 2019. Alabama did that in 2020. Georgia fans are going to wallow in their inner Munson, but on a night where LSU scored 30; Georgia scored 50. On a night when Jack Podlesny actually missed it didn’t matter. Saturday night when Georgia should have won it did.

That’s been the theme of the year. I’m not sure when it was clear that Georgia was the best team in the country, but it has been a while.
