ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the UGA football team are just one day away from starting the 2023 season.
Still. Recruiting never stops.
The Georgia staff extending some offers recently and one went out to an impressive junior defensive lineman out of Savannah in Walter Mathis Jr.
One of the top overall defenders in Savannah and across the state in the 2025 class, Mathis Jr saw his recruitment take off this summer, adding offers from Clemson, Auburn, Duke, among others. Now, he’s earned an offer from Tray Scott and the Bulldog.
A quick and powerful interior defensive lineman at 6-foot-3 285-pounds, Mathis Jr. is coming off a tremendous sophomore season where he made 48 tackles, 19.5 TFLs, and 4.5 sacks. He’s lightning-quick off the snap and lived in the backfield all season long. He shed blocks, creates penetration, and commands a double-team. His stock is rising, and his play will only improve with two more years of high school left. He’s turned into a big-time prospect, and now the Bulldogs are in the mix.
Another defensive line prospect to know about now is Zion Williams.
A massive 6-foot-4 300-pound interior defensive lineman out of Lufkin (TX), Williams is a run-stuffing defender who can also attack the quarterback. He’s big, physical, and plays with excellent pad level. He shoots off the ball and showed his dominance on a weekly basis last year as a sophomore.
Williams is one of the top 2025 defensive line prospects in the peach state, and now he holds an offer from the reigning national champion Georgia Bulldogs. Williams knows all about the program and shared his thoughts on the offer with Dawg Post.
“UGA is a great place,” Williams said. “They’re a d-line machine.”
