Record-Breaking Audience Watches UGA Football's Comeback over the Florida Gators
ATHENS - A lot of people watched Gunner Stockton take a knee on the Gators. No. 5 UGA Football’s 24-20 win over the Florida Gators was watched by 7.8 million viewers on Saturday - making it the most-watched game in rivalry’s history.
Disney said Wednesday that the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party was the most-watched game of the weekend in college football. 10.4 million viewers watched the rivalry at its peak viewership.
Georgia has had the most-watched game of the weekend in college football four times this season - the most of any program. Nearly 53 million viewers have watched the Bulldogs play this fall - making the UGA the second-most watched program in college football so far this year (Alabama 54.8 million). The Bulldogs still play Texas and Georgia Tech in spotlight games on ABC that combined to have over 38 million viewers in three games last fall.
Georgia has now played 33 games that have had at least seven million viewers since 2017. The win over the Gators Saturday was the 99th time Bulldogs have played in front of a TV viewership that was at least one million viewers.
Georgia-Florida is one of the most dependable rivalries in sports. For nearly two decades CBS anchored its season around slotting the rivalry at what has become it traditional 3:30 kickoff time in Jacksonville. As the game has grown in importance viewership has climbed as well.
The Gators and Bulldogs have combined to win five national titles since 1996. The game’s spotlight on CBS helped bring light to the festivities surrounding the game, and the passion of the fans going to it.
By 2010, the game was pulling in over five million viewers on CBS. Nine years later UGA-Florida was watched by nearly seven million viewers. Since 2012, Georgia-Florida is the fifth most-watched yearly series in college football. The Bulldogs’ breathtaking 4th-quarter comeback was the final edition of the game in Jacksonville until the series returns to its traditional home in a renovated stadium in 2028.
