ATHENS - ESPN's Paul Finebaum said earlier this week that the likely starting quarterback for UGA football in 2023, Carson Beck, had folks around UGA optimistic about him heading into the fall.

“Everyone is very high on Carson Beck,” Finebaum said.

The No. 1 Bulldogs open the season with Tennessee-Martin and Ball State before welcoming Shane Beamer and his South Carolina Gamecocks the third week of the season. Beck has never started in college football before.

Beck currently has +2000 odds to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy according to FanDuel.

“One thing to remember about Carson Beck is that he's been there for four years,” Finebaum continued. “He has not been under enormous pressure.”

Beck played in seven games last season - including Georgia’s lopsided win over TCU in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. In those games Beck was 26 of 35 for 310 yards with four touchdowns. He had seven runs for 43 yards.

Those seven games included the win over TCU, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Oregon - meaning Beck’s reps have often come against league foes.

“The only unknown for him is what happens if he needs to make a 3rd and 4 with the game on the line,” Finebaum said of Beck’s abilities with the game on the line.

UGA football coach Kirby Smart said Beck, Brock Vandagriff and Gunner Stockton need those around them to play better in order for Georgia’s offense to continue to explode in 2023.

“(The quarterbacks) need ten people around them focusing at a high level and a couple of those ten to make explosive plays for them,” Kirby said, later adding: “The people around them have to play better.”

The No. 1 Bulldogs’ game with Tennessee-Martin kicks off at 6 PM and will be shown on ESPN+.
