ATHENS - In this new world of college football, we’re seeing more and more quarterbacks hit the transfer portal each off-season.
Whether it’s due to a lack of playing time, a coaching change, the opportunity to play closer to home, or just a change of scenery, it’s safe to say the transfer portal has become all too common among college football quarterbacks.
DJ Shockley didn’t have the transfer portal to lean on when he was waiting behind David Greene in the early 2000s, but the point remains. He stayed patient, waited his turn, and led the Bulldogs to an SEC championship as a veteran in 2005. A rare story in today’s game.
However, Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs beat the transfer portal for veteran quarterback Carson Beck.
Beck has patiently waited his time to be QB1 for the Bulldogs, and could’ve easily hit the transfer portal multiple times in his career. When Stetson Bennett decided to return for the 2022 season, would anyone have blamed Beck for hitting the portal? Probably not.
But he never did, and now he’s the favorite to secure the starting quarterback role with hopes of leading Georgia to a third-consecutive championship.
Beck spoke with Dawg Post before the Peach Bowl last year to talk about why he stayed at Georgia and where he’s grown the most over the last several years.
With Bulldog QBs Matthew Stafford and Stetson Bennett on board, FanDuel's NFL odds for the LA Rams to win the NFC West now sit at +1000.

“I think coach Smart does a great job of developing guys, and obviously coach Monken was super smart and does a great job with the offense”, Beck said. “That was something I always kept in the back of my head. Obviously, I don’t want to go school to school. That’s a lot. Being with a new team and having to develop a relationship with new guys. I love the guys here and it’s been a lot of fun.”
Of course, it hasn’t been an easy road for Beck. He’s had to stay patient, waiting behind Stetson Bennett, J.T Daniels, and Stetson Bennett again.
Beck will enter his fourth season this fall, and he admitted that it’s been tough to remain on the sideline for so long.
“It’s difficult staying on the sideline”, Beck added. “Each week I just tried to prepare like I’m starting. That way I knew if I did get the opportunity that I would be ready. The mental side is where my game has improved over the last year or so. I think the physical part and throwing the ball will always continue to improve. That’s more of a chemistry thing with your receivers and understanding timing. But the mental side is what I’ve been trying to focus on and trying to improve. I’ll sit down and watch film by myself. Study the playbook. Make sure I’m understanding the ins and outs of every play.”
Everyone grows and matures in college, and Beck is no different. He came to Athens to play. He loves Georgia and had dreams of being “the guy” to lead the Georgia Bulldogs. It hasn’t happened just yet, but if he does win the job like many expect him too, and he leads Georgia to another championship season, his patience and mental growth will be a big reason why.
“Any experience you have in life that brings disappointment is something that you can grow on and learn from” Beck continued. “Every year that I’ve been here I’ve continued to grow.”
After three seasons, Beck is now playing for a new offensive coordinator in Mike Bobo. He’s hungry to learn, still determined to grow, and if he continues to improve more and more in fall camp, Beck has the potential to be one of the top quarterbacks in the country for the 2023 season.
It’s been a long road, but 2023 could be the year of Carson Beck. He has the talent, he’s grown from a mental standpoint, and after G-Day, it’s clear he’s bound for a special season this fall.
