ATHENS - UGA Football’s offseason has been headlined with non-football issues that Kirby Smart and the program have had to deal with.
Several Georgia players have been involved in driving violations and arrests since the Dawgs beat TCU in Los Angeles to secure another College Football Playoff National Championship.
On Thursday, linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson spoke to the media for the first time since the end of last season and since his arrest in February for racing and reckless driving (taking place in January). He was asked a handful of difficult questions relating to leadership and the culture of the program, and he stepped up to the podium taking accountability.

“I’m definitely disappointed in myself and the decision I made. I’ve been disciplined for that,” Dumas-Johnson said. “I’m just really looking forward to moving on from that. I know it was a bad decision, but I take full responsibility for what I did.”
Is this a culture issue? That is the question that has burned across people’s screens and minds the last few months. Sedrick Van Pran was asked about it at SEC Media Days, Dumas-Johnson was asked about it today and it will likely be asked to other players in the future.
“I definitely don’t think it’s a culture that we are creating, just some bad choices that we are making right now, and hopefully the team will get it together.”
Known as “Pop” around the program, Dumas-Johnson is a leader on the team. He is a super vocal player and a high energy player. He is in year three now with two championships under his belt. The middle linebacker position has been a position of strong leadership with guys like Roquan Smith and Nakobe Dean in years past.
“You can’t move past something without admitting it and taking credit for it, and that’s what I try to do. You can’t dwell in the past. If I dwell in the past, what do you think the defense is going to do? I’m the leader of the defense, one of them, so you have to keep moving forward.”

“The discipline?” Dumas Johnson asked with a slight chuckle of relief. “I will never do it again”
