ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will have a new quarterback in 2023.

It’s a position that everyone will have their eyes on. Being the quarterback at the University of Georgia is a BIG deal. It’s like playing shortstop for the New York Yankees. The shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers. Goalie for the New York Rangers.

It comes with a lot of responsibility, and only a certain type of quarterback can win the job and do it successfully.

At Georgia, you can’t just have elite arm talent. There’s a system in place where quarterbacks have to actually play the position. At other programs, the system is easy to master. But at Georgia, you have to understand what you’re doing, lead the offense, and be able to make NFL-caliber throws all over the field.

More importantly, you have to make good decisions with the ball.

Kirby Smart spoke about that after Georgia’s first scrimmage over the weekend.

“We’re looking for demeaner and communication”, Smart said. “I can get the stats, but a true quarterback is a decision-maker. In our system, because some systems take all the pressure of the quarterback and they just go really fast, we don't do that. We're a quarterback driven offense. So, can you process the information? That means you to signal. You get people lined up, then see what the defense is in and figure out, are we in the right situation? Which of these three choices Coach Bobo's given me am I going to utilize on this play? And then the play happens, and there might be a mistake or a breakdown, and you do not go full metal jacket and have catastrophe mode and put us in a bad situation.”

If you’re running Georgia’s offense, you better know what you’re doing. Throwing the ball 70+ yards is cool and all, but if you can’t play the position, you’re not winning the starting job.

“Decision-making is the number one thing I want to see at the quarterback position” Smart added. “Can you make consecutive, good decisions over and over that don't cost our team games? Because we have enough play makers, and we have enough plays that you will make a play inevitably. Don't make a bonehead play. That's what we're trying to avoid.”

Fortunately, the Bulldogs have three talented quarterbacks trying to win the starting job. Smart has said that multiple times now this spring.

The front-runner for the job, 2022 backup Carson Beck, knows how to play the position. Not only does he has exceptional arm talent, but he’s a leader, knows how to play the position, and is a better athlete than most realize. The Jacksonville, Florida native has been patiently waiting for his time at Georgia, and now he’s ready to show what he’s capable of.

“Carson (Beck) has really good command of the offense”, Smart said after Saturday’s scrimmage. “He understands it inside and out. He communicates it. He gets things correct. He had a couple poor decisions and choices today, but he also made some plays, made some really good throws. He has a really good presence in the pocket, moves around.”

That sounds exactly what Smart and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is looking for. A smart, efficient quarterback who consistently makes the correct decisions with the ball. The arm talent is there, and sources say he knows the offense as well as anyone on the roster.

Smart won’t say yet who has won the job, but is Carson Beck shows he can continue making good decisions with the ball, it’s hard to see anyone else taking the first snap come September.
