ATHENS - Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs will be replacing one of the greatest Bulldog cornerbacks of all time this year.

That’s what Kelee Ringo meant to the Georgia football program. A former 5-star from Arizona who bought into Kirby Smart’s plan at Georgia, and left as a two-time national champion and a likely 1st-round NFL Draft pick.

One of the top overall prospects in the country out of high school in the 2020 class, Ringo had a 5-star career at Georgia and made one of the biggest plays in Bulldog history, picking off a pass from Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, taking it to the house, and securing Georgia’s first national championship since 1980.

He won’t be easy to replace, but the Bulldogs have some serious talent ready to take over the role Ringo left in the secondary. Fran Brown has one starter returning in third-year cornerback Kmari Lassiter, and we’ll see some serious competition this spring for the other starting position.

You’d have to think that sophomore Daylen Everette is the current favorite to replace Ringo heading into the spring. Part of Georgia’s impressive 2022 recruiting class, Everette was a five-star flip from Clemson who brings some impressive ball skills and plenty of length to Georgia’s secondary.

As a freshman last season, Everette played in 10 games and logged 132 snaps according to Pro Football Focus. That was third on the team last season for cornerbacks. He also played on the kick coverage unit last year. In total, Everette made 13 tackles on the season with four tackles coming against rival Georgia Tech. Look for the big 6-foot-1 190-pounder to have a possible breakout season in 2023.

Then you have Nyland Green. A lean, talented cornerback with plenty of length at 6-foot-1 185-pounds, Green appeared in six games and played 55 snaps in 2022. Part of Georgia’s 2021 class, Green has experience on special teams and will be entering his third full season next fall. A former four-star prospect out on Newton High School, look for Green to push Everette as much as he can this off-season. The Covington native had an outstanding high school career and showed all the tools necessary to push for a starting role at some point during his Georgia career. Now is go-time for Nyland Green.

A young cornerback to keep an eye on is the speedy Julian Humphrey. Another cornerback with length who knows how to run, the 6-foot-0 190-pound Texas native played in three games last season as a freshman. A former track star in high school, Humphrey ran a 10.55 in the 100m and a 21.17 in the 200m as a junior at Clear Lake High School in Houston. He’s a talented cornerback with promise, so he’s one who could see plenty of time late in games against inferior opponents.

Two incoming freshmen to keep an eye on this fall include former 5-star AJ Harris and former 4-star Chris Peal.
